School bully’s vile act as 12yo in ICU after suicide attempt
A school bully who pushed a 12-year-old girl to attempt suicide later snuck into ICU to snap photos of her while in a coma to post to social media.
School bullies who drove a 12-year-old girl to attempt to take her own life later snuck into ICU while she was in a coma to take photos of her.
Kelaia Turner, now 14, endured over a year of physical and verbal abuse at the hands of five of her peers at the Dr Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School in Greenville, South Carolina, according to the New York Post.
Kelaia attempted to take her own life in 2023 and was pronounced dead for eight minutes before paramedics managed to revive her.
As a result, the tween suffered severe brain damage and was in a coma for weeks afterwards.
During this time, one of the bullies decided to visit the ICU to take photos of the comatose girl and post them to social media to mock her and spread rumours about her injuries.
Kelaia’s mother, Ty Turner, is now demanding justice and has filed a lawsuit against Greenville County Schools, claiming they were negligent in responding to her bullying and harassment claims.
The 24-page suit claims the school allowed the bullying to go unchecked for a year and a half, and faculty and staff led to their daughter’s attempted suicide, according to WYFF4.
It also states that the bullying started in 2021 when Kelaia started wearing her natural hair to school, which prompted students to call her “roach” and say she looked like “a man.”
Kelaia’s teacher allegedly joined in on the mockery and would acknowledge the victim when her bullies asked her, “Where’s the roach?”
“They used to teach us, ‘Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me’,” Ms Turner told the news outlet. “Unfortunately, words do hurt.”
The mum said that she reached out to the school personally “seven to nine” times, and half the time, they didn’t respond.
If they did, it would be inconsequential, and no resolution would have been suggested.
In 2022, Kelaia’s parents claimed that students played an offensive YouTube video called ‘The Black People Song’ aloud in class, and their teacher didn’t intervene.
Later that year, bullies allegedly poured water on the girl’s clothes and threw them in the bin.
After various verbal and physical attacks such as these, things escalated when Kelaia got into a fight with one of her bullies, with school officials choosing to suspend her and not her bully.
Ms Turner said that March 17, 2023, was a day she will never forget.
That evening, she found her daughter in her room after she attempted suicide.
“She had fully committed to what it was that she was attempting to do, and she was gone for eight whole minutes,” she recalled.
“Paramedics couldn’t find a pulse, and they couldn’t find her heartbeat. There were grown men in the room crying.”
Now, after 101 days in hospital, Kelaia has no control over her body and is in total care, non-verbal and has to use a feeding tube.
News.com.au has reached out to Greenville Country Schools for comment but they have not responded at the time of publication.
However, the school released a statement to WYFF4 denying the allegations and claiming its staff took the appropriate action when dealing with the bullying claims.
“We disagree with these allegations and have conducted a thorough investigation and review of each allegation at the time they were made,” they said.
