Quaden Bayles undergoes 11th surgery in 9 years
The Brisbane boy who touched hearts around the world earlier this year is in hospital, having his 11th operation in nine years.
Quaden Bayles, who went viral earlier this year after his mum shared a heartbreaking video of him breaking down after being bullied, has just undergone his 11th surgery.
The nine-year-old, who was born with achondroplasia – the most common form of dwarfism, went under the knife at Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane on Monday in a procedure to remove eight teeth due to overcrowding.
Mum Yarraka Bayles took to the Stand Tall 4 Dwarfism Facebook page to keep followers updated, sharing an X-ray of his mouth.
“Quaden just went under anaesthetic, needing 8 more teeth out, 7 years after he had 7 teeth out due to overcrowding as you can see from his most recent X-ray,” she wrote.
“We all know he’s got a big mouth but just not big enough for all these teeth trying to come through bless him.”

It’s not clear if the overcrowding is related to Quaden’s dwarfism but Yarraka explained he would be recovering in the PICU until his anaesthetic wears off and he can breathe unassisted.
“Hopefully we can get to go home if he is coping OK with treatment,” she said.
Quaden captured hearts of people around the world when Yarraka shared a heartbreaking video of him in February breaking down after being subjected to the taunts of playground bullies.
The nine-year-old’s plight inspired many to donate over $670,000 which was donated to multiple charities, including some working to help Indigenous communities.
Sadly his emotional struggles also led to a cruel consipracy about his age circulating, one which led Yarraka to share a photo of his passport in a bid to shut it down.
Outraged supporters of the Brisbane boy also leapt to his defence, sharing a photo that proved he is nine years old.
In a post on her Instagram account, Yarraka explained Quaden had undergone 11 surgical procedures since he was born.
He had one operation as a three-year-old to remove the seven teeth his mum referred to in her post – as well as undergoing major brain and spinal surgeries.
She accompanied the post with photos of him in hospital back in 2013 next to photos of him having the operation today.
“He’s not impressed that he couldn’t keep his teeth for the tooth fairy and get $$$ even though he knows I’m the tooth fairy,” she said.
Yarraka has since updated followers, saying Quaden was “recovering like a champ” and was ready to go home.
“So proud of you my SonShine @quaden_the_kid, strongest, smartest guy I know,” she said.
