The eye-watering cost of a bottle of water at a cinema has attracted anger from customers, with one saying the Sydney venue was taking it to the extreme.
An image shared to Reddit shows the menu pricing board at the IMAX theatre in Darling Harbour, which is owned by Event Cinemas.
People were stunned at the price of a 750ml bottle of Pump water, a Coca-Cola product, which was being sold for $7.90.
“This is at IMAX in Darling Harbour, where you’ve just paid $40 to see a movie,” the image was captioned.
“I’ve watched multiple [people] take a bottle out of the fridge, glance at the prices, then put it back. Kinda surprised they tell you the prices at all.”
For contrast, a 750ml bottle of Pump water at Coles and Woolworths is $3.15.
Other social media users expressed surprise the price wasn’t even higher, while some said they had purchased more expensive bottled water in sports stadiums and airports.
“I’d go drink tap water in the bathrooms before I pay that price, wtf,” one person commented.
Another remarked: “Imagine the mark-up if it was San Pellegrino.”
“They are taking the p*** out of the food and beverages but isn’t this how movie cinemas actually make their money,” one chimed in.
One social media user commented: “Petrol is $2.20 per litre and water that falls from the sky is almost $10 per litre.”
“I’ve been taking drink and snacks in a backpack for years – do people honestly use the movie snack bars,” someone asked.
Another speculated: “I’m surprised it hasn’t reached $10 by now to be honest. Also Darling Harbour would be a massive captive audience. It’s not like you can just walk down to a Coles or Woolies like you could if you were at a cinema in a shopping centre.”
One social media user commented: “That’s rookie numbers, try going to a music festival.”
“A bottle of water costs more than Monster? That’s new,” voiced someone else.
Another said: “I just drink tap water these days. And I wear a backpack with a bottle of water in the side pocket … everywhere I go.”
“I just got back from Japan, even bottled water in the f*****g airport was $1,” one person wrote.
A spokesperson from Event commented on the shock about the price.
“We offer a range of options and promotions for those customers that wish to purchase food and beverage in our cinemas, including for our Cinebuzz members, who can also access a discount in person or when pre-ordering items online,” the spokesperson told news.com.au.
