A British magazine has featured a pregnant transgender man in a groundbreaking cover for its latest issue.
In a deeply vulnerable interview and accompanying photoshoot for Glamour UK’s June Pride digital edition, author Logan Brown shared his journey to fatherhood, after he “unexpectedly” become pregnant to his partner, legendary non-binary drag performer Bailey J Mills.
The 27-year-old, who announced his pregnancy in November and gave birth to daughter Nova via C-section in late May, told the magazine it had, first, been difficult to accept.
“Everything, all my manlihood that I’ve worked hard for, for so long, just completely felt like it was erased,” Brown said.
“It was really hard because how do you tell your partner, ‘Oh, I’m pregnant, but oh, I’m also your boyfriend as well’. It’s just something that you just don’t say as a man.”
What changed both Brown and Mills’ outlook, he added, was realising, “I’m never gonna get this opportunity again to – as a queer couple – have a baby that’s biologically both ours … Eventually, something just clicked”.
In an accompanying letter to his daughter, Brown wrote that people’s support when he announced his pregnancy “gave us the courage to continue and be proud even more”.
“Months went by and I remember dreaming of what it would feel like to hold you in my arms all the time,” he said.
“Nova, I want you to know that you will be loved so much by both your dads. We will always protect you and allow you to express yourself in any way you want, and to love whoever you want.
“You have already taught me so much and I promise you this … I have never loved someone so much in my life. You are truly – and always will be – a miracle.”
Still, he didn’t minimise the attacks he’d faced over the course of sharing his relationship and pregnancy with the world – one well-known TikToker, who Brown didn’t name, “got all their followers to come over onto my Instagram and harass me”, bombarding his posts with the comment, “Men can’t get pregnant”.
“I spent so much time feeling shame and being hard on myself until I thought, ‘You can enjoy this process or make it really difficult for yourself’. I’m a pregnant man, and we’re very lucky, and I’m proud to do what we’re doing,” Brown told Glamour.
“Now, I get to bring a child up to know that she can be authentically herself and love whoever she wants; that’s really powerful for me.”
Glamour’s European Editorial Director, Deborah Joseph, said when her team first met Brown and “heard his incredible story, we were blown away by his strength and courage”.
“We knew he would be the perfect cover star for our June Pride issue, as a shining example of empowerment, inclusivity and equality,” she said.
“Logan and his partner Bailey bringing their beautiful baby into the world is a story of love and acceptance; things that we are sadly often reminded that the world could use a little more of.”
Brown’s cover comes at a time when trans people are increasingly under attack in his native UK and around the world.
In April, Britain’s Equalities Minster Kemi Badenoch announced she wanted to change the legal definition of “sex”, a move which would strip trans people of many of the rights and protections they’re currently afforded.
In a letter endorsing Ms Badenoch’s call, the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) recommended, among other things, making it legal for organisations in healthcare settings to limit their services to “biological women”.
British charity and advocacy organisation Mermaids said at the time it was “extremely distressing to see the UK’s equality watchdog, the EHRC, seeking to strip trans people’s rights from the Equality Act 2010”.
“By redefining sex, they support removing the rights and protects trans people have had for over a decade.”
