The mother of a nine-year-old girl whose body was sexually assaulted by hospital worker while she was in a mortuary has revealed she “can’t sleep” after learning what happened to her daughter.
David Fuller was sentenced on Wednesday to “die in prison” after pleading guilty to a string of horrific crimes – including the murder of two women in 1987 and the sexual abuse of more than 100 women and girls in two UK hospital morgues.
Fuller, now 67, beat and strangled Wendy Knell, 25, and Caroline Pierce, 20, to death before having sex with their lifeless bodies in their apartments in Kent, south east England, in 1987.
He remained free for more than 30 years after the killings – but after a breakthrough in DNA evidence, police were finally able to identify him as the perpetrator of the horrifying double murder last year.
It was only then the horrifying extent of Fuller’s pathological fascination with dead bodies came to light, after police discovered four hard drives packed with millions of images and videos of abuse during a raid of his home.
The horrifying clips revealed the National Health Service (NHS) worker – who used his job as a technical supervisor in hospitals to access morgues – had abused the bodies of at least 99 females aged between nine and 100.
Fuller admitted murdering Ms Knell and Ms Pierce halfway through his trial and later pleaded guilty to 51 offences in relation to his horror morgue crimes, including 44 charges relating to 78 identified victims, including three children.
He was handed two life sentences for murdering Ms Knell and Ms Pierce and a further 12 year sentence, to run concurrently, for the sexual offences between 2008 and November 2020, The Sun reports.
During his sentencing on Wednesday, many of his victim’s families shared impact statements with one describing Fuller as the “worst of humanity”.
The mum of Fuller’s youngest victim, a nine-year-old girl whose identity has been protected, cried as she addressed the court.
“I need you to understand the pain this has caused me and my family,” she told Fuller, according to a report by local outlet Kent Live.
“Out of the blue, the police knocked on my door to tell me what had happened to her.
“She was my baby and couldn’t say no to a dirty old man who abused her body, but she would have.
“I was always vigilant about telling her about sexual abuse and she knew that there was disgusting people in the world and rape.”
While reports state Fuller “refused to look at the families” throughout the hearing, the emotional statement from the unidentified mother of his youngest victim prompted him to “glance” at her.
She went on to described Fuller’s actions as “so disgusting it would never appear in anyone’s imagination”.
“Every day I would go to that mortuary and real human beings and staff members helped me dress her and I would kiss her for weeks,” she told the court.
“But now that special time is ruined because that disgusting man there did what he did.
“He would move her toys and blankets and have sex with my baby.
“I can’t even touch them now because of what he did. It breaks my heart.”
She concluded by telling the court she “can’t eat or sleep” adding she feels “sick” by what happened.
“I think of her birthmark she hated but I loved,” she continued, Kent Live reported.
“Her long blonde hair I brushed. But now I see that awful man touching her in that way.
“I don’t know how I will carry on with my life now.”
The distraught mother concluded by apologising to her daughter, telling the court: “I’m sorry baby, I know what he’s done.”
Other families echoed their horror at uncovering what happened to their loved ones after they died, with one describing his acts as “incomprehensible”.
“It makes me feel physically sick and I will never mention that man’s name.”
One of his victims was Azra Kemal, 24, was raped by Fuller after falling to her death in Kent.
He assaulted her dead body three times, and even researched her death online – reading tributes from her family and friends.
Fuller assaulted her dead body just hours before her heartbroken mother cuddled her to say her last goodbye.
‘Unimaginable sexual depravity’
After Fuller’s arrest for the murders of Ms Knell and Ms Pierce, cops found four hard drives packed with millions of indecent images and videos of “unimaginable sexual depravity”.
He filmed himself carrying out depraved acts of necrophilia across two mortuaries he had access to at work.
After the horrific abuse, he used Facebook to track down the people he’d defiled and learn about their lives during a spine-chilling spree of crimes that went on from 2008 to November 2020.
Prosecutors say the case is “unprecedented in legal history” and “the stuff of nightmares”.
The British government announced an independent inquiry into how Fuller went undetected and promised to look at the maximum sentence for necrophilia, which is currently two years in jail.
Ms Knell was found dead in her apartment in Guildford Road on June 23, 1987, while Ms Pierce was snatched five months later outside her home in Grosvenor Park, on November 24.
Her naked body was discovered in a water-filled ditch on December 15. Both victims had been living less than 2kms apart from each other before they were murdered.
Fuller’s ‘depraved’ secret unravels
Fuller was finally identified as the killer of both women when his brother submitted a DNA that forensic experts determined had “some similarity” to the profile obtained but did not match.
When he gave another voluntary sample last year, further testing demonstrated that while he could be excluded as the killer, a male relative of his could not.
As a result, Fuller was arrested and his DNA swab matched semen and saliva found at the crime scenes.
Once in custody Fuller’s fingerprint also matched one discovered in Ms Knell’s blood on a Milletts carrier bag found behind her bed headboard.
He was also linked to her murder by a distinctive trainer mark left on clothing.
During sentencing, Justice Cheema-Grubb branded Fuller as “cunning and intelligent” and also as a “prowler” when he attacked Ms Knell and Ms Pierce.
“There are some crimes that are so wicked that even if the defendant died in prison that would not be a just term,” she said.
“You were described as a man good under pressure while in seclusion you committed acts of the deepest darkness.
