Kmart responds to ‘exploding’ cookware claim from NZ mum

A New Zealand mother has expressed concerns after her Kmart cookware “exploded” in her face while she was preparing her family dinner.

A mother has shared images of her shattered cooking pod lid, warning others to be “aware” after it “exploded” in her face.

The woman, from New Zealand, was making silverside and the pot from Kmart was boiling away on the stove with the dinner inside.

“I had taken the lid off to check it and as I went to put it back on it just exploded in my face, luckily I turned away and just got the shards in my hands,” she wrote in the Facebook group Kmart Mums NZ.

It was particularly concerning as 10 minutes prior, her seven-month-old daughter was sitting at her feet.

“This lid exploded as far as the edge of the living room carpet, where my daughter was in her walker and as you can see in the photos into dinner,” she wrote.

“We obviously won’t be eating now because of the shards of glass all through it.”

News.com.au understands there is no recall on this product, and the glass is a standard safety glass used in cookware.

Incidents like this can happen when the product has any kind of damage.

“The safety of our customers is always our priority. While this product complies with safety standards and is regularly tested, we encourage this customer to reach out to us directly so that we can fully investigate,” a Kmart spokesperson told news.com.au.

This isn’t the first time something like this has transpired, with a woman facing a similar issue with her Anko brand three-tiered steamer, which retails for $20.

She had been using it for two months successfully when it suddenly shattered as it was steaming her family’s dinner.

The mum said it was lucky that she hadn’t been cut, telling Yahoo News: “When it shattered I was stunned and disappointed. But I’m grateful I didn’t have my hand near the lid and the glass pieces didn’t cut me.

“When I got it I was delighted to have scored a bargain, but now I’m considering going for a not-so-cheap item. I just want to warn others of this steamer.”
