The father of JonBenet Ramsey is petitioning for an independent investigation and additional DNA testing into the death of his daughter.

John Ramsey asked Colorado Governor Jared Polis to take the unsolved case out of the hands of the Boulder Police Department (BPD) and allow an independent agency to test DNA.

“You have the power,” the petition reads.

“Given the lack of progress by the Boulder Police, we the undersigned petitioners ask you to move DNA decisions in this case away from the BPD to an independent agency so that JonBenet has a last chance at the justice she deserves.”

Six-year-old JonBenet was found dead in the basement of her parents’ home on December 26, 1996.

The child beauty queen had been reported missing hours earlier after her parents found a lengthy ransom note demanding $US 118,000 in exchange for JonBenet.

An autopsy revealed that the young girl died of strangulation and a blow to the head.

The Boulder City Medical Examiner reported an 8 1/2-inch (21.59 cm) fracture on her skull. Authorities have not convicted any suspects in the case.

BPD said in a statement last year that they received over 21,000 tips, letters and emails and travelled to 19 states to interview more than a thousand individuals in connection to the murder.

The police department worked with federal, state and local agencies on the case.

Colorado Bureau of Investigation has updated over 750 DNA samples from the investigation with the latest DNA technology, the department said in its statement.

“We have a shared goal to bring justice — and hopefully some peace — to JonBenet’s family and everyone who was impacted by her loss,” Police Chief Maris Herold said in a statement.

“Our investigation with federal, state and local partners has never stopped. That includes new ways to use DNA technology. We’ve always used state of the art technology as it has been at the forefront of this investigation. Every time the DNA technology changed, we worked to make sure the evidence could be tested.”

He added that the murder investigation “has always been and will continue to be a priority for the Boulder Police Department.”

John and his wife, Patsy, who died in 2006 were a focus of Boulder investigators and drew scrutiny amid national interest in the case, but they were cleared in 2008 after unknown male DNA was found on the girl’s dress.

The Ramseys’ now adult son, Burke, settled a $750 million ($A 1.05 billion) defamation suit with American TV network CBS that suggested he might have been the killer. He was also reportedly cleared by the DNA.
