Eating Disorders: A mental illness

Warning: Confronting

An influencer who recently revealed an anorexia battle died after falling asleep in a friend’s arms, and never waking up.

Josi Maria, 24, from Kiel in north Germany, died of heart failure after battling the eating disorder while on holiday on the Spanish island, Gran Canaria.

Her mother confirmed the heartbreaking news in a tribute underneath one of Josi’s last Instagram posts, writing she was “an angel on earth”.

The tragic news came just two days after Josi opened up to her 143,000 followers on Instagram about her battle with the eating disorder, revealing she did not want to die from the disease.

“I don’t want to be one in 10 who die from anorexia,” she wrote in a loosely translated post.

It has been reported that she fell asleep in her friend’s arms after arriving at her holiday destination and “never woke up”, according to German news website DE24.

Josi’s mum wrote that her fight against the serious illness was “helpless”.

“My heart aches endlessly. The day before I held you, dear Josi, in my arms, we went shopping and you are looking forward to Christmas and your vacation,” she wrote.

“The following night you fell asleep peacefully in your girlfriend’s arms on Gran Canaria. Your little heart just stopped beating.”

Josi spoke about her battle with anorexia throughout the years on her social media accounts.

“Anorexia is not a matter of weight, but of the head!” she wrote in one post, according to The Sun.

“That it is not always just the will to be thin, but that there is much more to it: performance, confirmation, control.

“And that it is an uphill battle to go against it, to gain weight, to find joy in life again.”

In many of her posts, Josi wrote that she wanted to be a woman who “infects others with positivity”.
