Hipster Sydney pub boycotted for controversial Australia Day ban

Many are boycotting this hipster pub for its controversial stand on Australia Day, the second political statement it has made in recent months.

Debunking the Australia Day Myth

One of Sydney’s most hipster pubs has come under fire again for its controversial stance on Australia Day.

The Newtown Hotel banned Australian flag attire and accessories, sparking fierce criticism from locals who slammed the popular pub for being anti-Australian.

It comes after the hotel held a ‘F**k the Cup’ event for Melbourne Cup, a move which also divided opinion.

The pub, located in Sydney’s hipster mecca of Newtown, posted a sign which the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander History group shared on its Facebook page.

“Newtown Hotel respectfully declines to be part of the 26th of January as the land was not ceded,” the sign said.

The Facebook group thanked the hotel for its “solidarity and for being culturally appropriate on this Invasion Day, much respect”.

Their post received dozens of comments applauding the pub for its stand but others were not so supportive.

“Can’t wear the Australian flag in Australia? Ridiculous,” wrote one man.

Some criticised the pub for not closing entirely and instead reaping the rewards of an Australia Day trade on “stolen land”.

“They still wanted to rip people off with drink and food prices. Hypocrites. I wont be going there Australia Day or any other day,” wrote one woman.

Another lady wrote on the hotel’s Facebook page, “If you are the hotel which banned Australia Day then I will never enter a foot at your door and trust me, neither will my friends. How totally unAustralian of you! Disgusting”.

One man wrote, “How have they bettered anything for the ‘first people’, only perpetuating self loathing on a day to celebrate what we have today. Creating a bigger divide. Disgusting move”.

Others have taken to giving the hotel one-star ratings online.

Stephen Gethin gave the hotel one star and wrote on Google review: “Unpatriotic, anti-Australian. Happy to make money out of the modern Australian economy, yet decries the fact that whites came here. No one is stopping you grotesque hypocrites leaving for another country if that’s what you really believe”.

Those in favour of the stand made comments like, “Newtown hotel you are amazing and culturally respectful. It’s fantastic to see you sticking your necks out and standing up for indigenous right”.
