A mum thought she had a nabbed a paperweight at a garage sale but years later she was shocked to learn about the hidden truth inside the small love-heart shaped object.

Jessica Roberts, of Wellington, Ohio, had spotted the trinket at a garage sale five years ago when her son insisted they buy it.

For just $1 ($A0.95), she thought “why not” and purchased the item which she uses as a paperweight.

But just before Christmas this year, Ms Roberts discovered there was much more to the bargain buy after scrolling through Amazon.

“A few years ago I was at a yard sale and [my son] Braiden saw this heart-shaped paperweight looking thing and wanted me to buy because he wanted to give it to me. Who can argue with that logic; it was only $1 …” the mum wrote in a Facebook post.

“So I was sitting here looking at random things on Amazon and I see the same paperweight being sold for $30 and click on the picture to see what is so special about it and well it’s a type of urn for small amounts of human or animal ashes.”

The heart-shaped item turned out to be exactly that, an urn – and had a person’s ashes inside.

“Now I don’t know what to do I had noticed before that there were screws and a cover on the bottom and assumed it was for sand or something … do I open it? Do I throw it away? If I’ve learned anything from horror movies this is how you get haunted,” she continued in her post.

However, curiosity got the better of her and she later revealed she opened the item to discover it did contain ashes.

The mum then shared an image of the urn in hopes of finding its original owner.

Eventually, when her local paper, The Wellington Chronicle, ran a story about her unique find, the real owner of the urn was uncovered.

“Within hours, screenshots had been shared on multiple pages and it was an amazing outpour of people who wanted to help,” Ms Roberts wrote on Facebook.

“I was contacted by the husband of the woman who had lost the urn.”

The woman had lost it years ago – and it contained the ashes of her father.

After “speaking with the husband” for a period of time, Ms Roberts managed to give back the precious item just before Christmas.

“He plans to surprise [his wife] with the urn Christmas morning and her father’s remains can finally rest where they belong – with her.

“After how miserable 2020 has been, I feel truly honoured to be able to bring someone a little bit of joy for the Christmas season.”
