‘Covert operation’: Michelle Obama goes ‘undercover’ at Target store
Former First Lady Michelle Obama went “undercover” to sign copies of her new book, sharing footage of the hilarious “covert operation”.
The former First Lady – the wife of Barack Obama, who served as America’s 44th President between 2008 and 2016 – visited a Target store in St Louis, Missouri to promote The Light We Carry.
In a video of the “secret mission” shared to Instagram, Ms Obama makes her way into the store in a baseball cap and sunglasses to sign copies of the new release.
“We are on a mission. It’s a secret mission. I had a crazy idea, I heard my paperback is out, and it’s in Target,” she said in the clip.
“So we are going to go undercover because I have not seen my book actually in a Target store. So we are going to try to do this low-key.”
After signing six copies of the book – a follow-up to her best-selling memoir, Becoming – the 60-year-old grabs a basket and does a lap of the budget store.
“I got something for me, something for my husband and something for (our dog) Sunny,” she jokes before adding, “The girls, they can get their own stuff.”
Spokespeople for Ms Obama have repeatedly denied she will run in this year’s presidential election, amid speculation by both the Democratic and Republican camps in the past 12 months.
In a 2022 interview with the BBC, Ms Obama said she “detests” questions about her running for office.
“As former First Lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president,” the director of communications for her office, Crystal Carson, told NBC News in a statement last month.
“Mrs Obama supports President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ re-election campaign.”
