Children critically injured in Melbourne house fire identified
The three children critically injured in a Melbourne house fire have been identified, with police investigating whether they were home alone.
The three children who are fighting for life after a horrific house fire tore through a home in Melbourne have been identified.
Izabelle, five, Kalais, three, and their 21-month-old sister were rescued from the burning home in Sydenham about 9.30pm on Sunday evening.
Neighbours raised the alarm after hearing loud bangs and firefighters raced to the scene where the three children were found inside.
They were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police are investigating whether the children were home alone when the fire broke out.
The family had only moved into the property in Fergus Court a week ago.
Detective Acting Inspector Adam Henry said all three children were unconscious when they were found by firefighters, having suffered from smoke inhalation.
“This is an incredibly tragic incident,” he said.
“Firefighters in particular did an incredible job to locate the children and get them out of the home quickly.”
Mr Henry said the children’s mother was known to police.
Jayde Petalas, who is Kalais’ father and doesn’t live at the house, said police called him to inform him about the fire.
“They were the best little kids. They would have been petrified,” he told 9News.
“I hope they didn’t feel anything to be honest. Obviously they would have, but I just tell myself they didn’t.”
A total of 30 firefighters in total were called to the property and finally brought the blaze under control at 11pm.
One neighbour described the fire as “heartbreaking”.
Speaking to 9News, she said: “I had no idea who was in there, the only thing I could recall was hearing those kids playing outside (over the weekend).
“To hear they are fighting for their lives is heartbreaking.
“It’s just awful, I work with kids and to hear that is heartbreaking. I can’t imagine what their parents are going through.”
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
