Chanel Contos calls out Knox Grammar brothers and publishes thousands of examples of similar behaviour by other men

Thousands of women have come forward with shocking stories of verbal abuse after a former Sydney private school boy punched a woman and humiliated her on a night out.

Harrowing stories of abuse and intimidation have been revealed by thousands of women after two Sydney brothers were exposed for their own disturbing behaviour.

Activist Chanel Contos, who founded Teach Us Consent in response to a glaring lack of appropriate sex education for teens, took to Instagram last night to ask her 20,000 followers if they had experienced behaviour similar to that shown by the Drummond brothers.

Nick Drummond, 20, found himself at the centre of a media storm earlier this month after he escaped conviction for shaming a young woman for her outfit at a Sydney pub, before punching her in the face.

Before the violent attack, Nick, a Knox Grammar graduate, had told the woman to “put your t*ts away”, the court heard.

Judge Robert Sutherland told the court it wasn’t “necessary” for Nick to be convicted, instead suggesting the woman’s outfit “might have been perceived by a former student of Knox (Grammar) to be provocative”.

Nick’s older brother Dan is also in hot water after Daily MailAustralia yesterday published a number of harrowing and allegedly threatening messages sent to his ex-girlfriend after they broke up.

The ex-girlfriend, who spoke to the publication anonymously, reported the abusive messages to NSW Police in 2017, with officers cautioning Dan at the time and telling him to stop contacting her.

“I blocked him on social media but he still had my email address,” the woman said.

“He sent me things like, ‘You can run but you can’t hide. I know where you live’. I was really scared.”

The woman claims Dan spent two years sending her abusive and threatening texts, including one that said, “Jeez you have really beefed up. So ever slightly declining in looks.”

Another read “Why don’t you go f**k all my friends instead of crying to them … You are a liar and full of f***ing sh*t”.

In a statement to news.com.au, Ms Contos said the attitudes towards women shown by the behaviour of the Drummond brothers was a “microcosm of the problem”.

“It’s not rare that this behaviour happens, it’s rare that people speak up about it,” she said.

“These are structural issues and these brothers reflect a microcosm of the problem. We need accountability but more importantly we need a cultural change so this doesn’t keep happening.

“These instances are not one-offs … this behaviour happens daily and is rarely exposed.”

Ms Contos then asked her followers to write to her about abusive messages they had received – and was inundated with thousands of responses.

“My ex-boyfriend used to call me a sl*t and a b*tch whenever other boys would call me hot,” one woman replied.

“He messaged me saying he would rape and kill me because I wasn’t interested in him,” another wrote.

“Being called a fat sl*t for not sending nudes … in year 7,” a third added.

Ms Contos also published a statement from Dan’s ex-girlfriend.

“It took a lot to share my story and this is only about 1 per cent of it … the emotional abuse and harassment went on for years,” she alleged.

“Part of me always thought what happened to me wasn’t ‘that bad’, probably as I became somewhat desensitised to his behaviour over the years.”

The woman said her situation, of not speaking up and believing things weren’t “that bad”, proved “how conditioned women are to taking abuse and mistreatment from men”.

The woman said she had connected with other alleged victims and they were supporting each other.

“My goal in all of this is to help the push for change. Despite everything that’s happened I don’t necessarily want anything bad to happen to this man and his brother,” she wrote.

“I don’t want their lives to be ruined. I want there to be education. Therapy. Counselling, Rehabilitation. The brains of so many men need to be rewired.”

Dan is yet to respond to the Daily Mail story however younger brother Nick issued a statement earlier this week apologising for his behaviour.

His statement appeared to be in response to a mobile billboard parked outside his former school Knox Grammar that read “you will not silence our pain”.

“I would like to offer an unconditional apology to the people I have hurt by my actions. They fill me with shame and regret. I am deeply remorseful,” he said in a statement.

‘The judge’s comments … have exposed me to intense media scrutiny. But the fact remains that I was at fault and I must own it. I fully accept responsibility for my actions.

“I do not seek public forgiveness, but know I will have to work hard towards earning a second chance in life. Whatever I need to do, I will strive to do it.

“I thank my family and friends for their support, and know that I have to move forward as the best human being I was raised to be, in order to repay all those I have let down.

“I am a 20-year-old who did a terrible thing on one night of my life and now I am told it can go one of two ways for me: be crushed to nothingness by those who don’t know me or attempt to rehabilitate and better myself with a view to many years of positively contributing to society. I am going to aim for the latter. Sorry again to everyone.”
