Former The Bachelor star Matty “J” Johnson has revealed the one wardrobe item he can’t part ways with – and it’s a controversial one.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph for their ‘Inside My Wardrobe’ column, the 34-year-old revealed his fiance Laura Byrne, who he met on the show in 2017, has repeatedly begged him to throw out a pair of Calvin Klein underwear he’s had for nearly a decade.

“I think maybe my underwear,” Johnson, who shares two daughters with Byrne, said when asked what the oldest thing in his wardrobe is.

“I have a pair of Calvin Kleins from about eight years ago that Laura begs me to throw out.”

Asked for the “most surprising” thing in his wardrobe, the media personality made another somewhat eyebrow-raising (or just unAustralian) confession, sharing that he doesn’t “own a pair of thongs”.

While there are a “multitude of factors” that come into play when determining the frequency of replacing our underwear, Dr Yalda Jamali told Body+Soul in May that when it’s time to get new ones, you’ll know.

“Undies lose their shape quite quickly because they are so often washed, and the fit and cleanliness are both critical,” she said.

“If they are cleaned correctly and they still feel great, there is no need to chuck them out.

“Often females replace them incorrectly when they get a bleached-looking stain. The stain is normal and nothing to worry about. It occurs due to vaginal discharge pH and doesn’t necessarily mean the underwear is germy.

“If your underwear doesn’t fit properly or smells, it’s time to replace them.”

The specific time in which it’s appropriate to cycle through your underwear can be determined by the frequency of wear, founders of Australian lingerie brand Souszy, Ebony and Laura, told the publication.

Suffice to say, though, you shouldn’t be wearing the same pair of eight years.

“If you look after your underwear properly, you can extend its life expectancy. However, as a general rule, underwear should be replaced every six to 12 months,” they advised.

“Depending on the level of soiling, you may want to consider upgrading as soon as three months, to avoid excessive bacteria build up.”
