Australian accent at centre of wild break-up that has millions gripped
A woman has levelled a plethora of accusations against her ex, including that he “lied about being Australian” and “faked the death of his family”.
A video of a singer appearing to flip between an Australian and American accent is at the centre of wild public break-up that has the internet gripped.
American YouTuber and co-host of the popular Cancelled podcast Brooke Schofield has accused her ex Clinton Kane of a string of bombshell “lies”, including that he “faked the death of his family”.
In a 14-part series on TikTok, the social media star alleged her short-lived relationship with the 24-year-old came to an abrupt end after she discovered his mum was “still kicking”, despite him claiming he had lost her in the same year as his brother and father had also passed.
She also said the singer “lied about being Australian”, prompting Kane – who rose to social media fame with his 2021 singles ‘Chicken Tendies’ and ‘I Guess I’m in Love’ – to snap back, labelling the accusations “untrue”.
“Kane was born in the Philippines, and lived in Australia for a time as a child. Despite moving frequently, he considers Australia to be his home. He has never been disingenuous about this,” his rep told People in a statement.
The rep also clarified that the “mother” he referred to “a very special mother-like figure in his teenage years, who sadly passed,” not his biological mother, as was assumed, in a statement to Rolling Stone.
“He regrets the way this devastating news was communicated at the time.”
Clinton Kane’s ‘crazy’ Australian accent
While both parties have shared different versions of their break-up, an interview Kane did on Zach Sang Show at the time of their relationship falling apart has re-emerged online that appears to show him slipping in and out of his Australian accent – and it’s caused the bizarre messy break-up to explode.
During the chat, recorded for a podcast, Kane discusses the emotional impact of losing his mum, dad, and brother in the same year.
“Yeah it was a lot, Chicken Tendies is actually about losing my mum,” he said, explaining “she passed a way” a couple of weeksafter it was released.
As the interview proceeds, Dan Zolot – the show’s co-host, asks a question, but Kane accidentally speaks over him, prompting him to apologise.
“Keep going, sorry to interrupt you mate,” he states.
“That’s the strongest your accent has been since you’ve been in here,” Zolot replies. “You sounded pretty American until you said sorry.”
Kane was visibly surprised by the comment, asking: “Really?”
But the clip has lead many to speculate it adds weight to some of Schofield’s claims.
“This is so crazy to watch after listening to Brooke’s story,” the top comment, with almost 30,000 ‘likes’, reads.
Brooke Schofield’s accusations against her ex
Schofield’s lengthy video series detailing the many “lies” she alleges her ex told her throughout their 3-month romance was posted on Thursday after the YouTube singer shared a teaser of his new song in a video that appeared to address her.
“When you’ve been over the relationship for 2 years but she won’t stop yapping,” the video read, as he sipped on a drink as his music played.
It didn’t take long for Schofield – who has discussed their break-up in the past on several podcasts – to respond.
“No sh*t I can’t stop yapping, the nerve,” she begins, before she laid out intimate details of their relationship, including how they first met and the many “blowout fights” they had while together.
She explained how Kane detailed losing his entire family during a late-night meal at a diner in LA shortly after they first met, stating it was “horrible” and “unimaginable” and she instantly thought anyone who could come out of such a “tragedy” and be so successful was “very special”.
They became an item soon after, but Schofield claims she quickly saw “red flags” in her new man, accusing Kane of being controlling and refusing to let her leave his side.
In one video, Schofield shared a clip from one of her fights with Kane where he does not seem to have an Australian accent.
But it was the public response to Kane’s interview on the Zach Sang Show in July 2022 that sent her into detective mode.
“In the comments [of the TikTok video], I see someone write, ‘This is really strange. I don’t know where this Australian accent came from. He is not Australian, he is from Brunei. I grew up with him, I went to school with him, and I saw his mum last week’,” she alleges.

Confronting Kane, claims of ‘cheating’
The remarks sent her scouring Facebook for clues, where she said she found evidence that would suggest his biological mum was still alive, leading her to confront him.
“His dad is dead, not that that’s a good thing. But there’s one out of three that are dead and the rest are still kicking,” she claimed.
“Everything is fake.”
She concluded by claiming the pair eventually broke up after Kane “cheated” on her, an accusation against him that dates back to September 2022, when she shared a video of the day she discovered his alleged infidelity.
Schofield’s accusations about her ex have amassed tens of millions of views since being posted on Thursday, but Kane’s rep told People he has “moved forward” from the drama and “remains focused and committed to putting out new music”.
