A 27-year-old Australian model who appeared on popular reality TV series Australia’s Next Top Model has died after a years-long health battle.
Lucy Markovic died overnight after a battle with a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM), which is when a tangle of abnormal blood vessels bypasses the normal capillaries. This means it connects to the veins and arteries, which can lead to a bleed on the brain or damage to the tissue. Lucy revealed her AVM was the size of a golf ball.
Her partner took to her Instagram story on Friday to confirm Lucy had passed away.
“She was at peace. Me, her mother and my mother were all present with her,” the post read.
“We ask you to give us space in these hard times. May Lucy rest in peace.”
Just hours before, Lucy’s partner had said she was “battling for her life” and asked everyone to send their prayers in their direction.
Fans were quick to head to Lucy’s comment section to express their heartbreak at the loss.
“May your soul rest in peace,” one person said.
Another said: “Rip beautiful angel.”
Fellow models, including Milli Ross and Gabriella Brooks, also expressed their heartbreak at the sudden announcement. Cartia Mallan and Martha Kalifatidis also shared their condolences.
Sandra Kaczorowska wrote: “A beautiful person, an amazing model. It was a pleasure to get to know you. Rest in peace angel.”
Mallan commented: “Rest in peace my angel. All my love to your family. I’m absolutely heartbroken.”
Last month, Lucy shared she would be undergoing brain surgery on April 2.
“Lucky + unlucky – Radiation, seizures, heavy medication and 4 years later,” she captioned a post of herself in a hospital bed.
“I will be undergoing brain surgery on the 26th of this month for the AVM in the back of my brain (arteriovenous malformation) that is the size of a golf ball. (Now has changed to the 2nd of April).
“Excited, thankful, scared, supported, hopeful.
“Full flood of emotions in this time. Life’s a journey and I’m ready for the next chapter.”
Lucy appeared on the 2015 edition of Australia’s Next Top Model, and was ultimately crowned runner up. She was just 16 when she joined the competition.
Her agency, Elite NYC, also took to Instagram to express their heartbreak at the loss.
“Lucy was a bright shining light, and had an incredible dry sense of humour. Her smile and laughter could light up a room, and draw you closer to her. She loved to dance, she really shined,” the post read.
