Americans try to guess what ‘Macca’s’ means

Aussies love to abbreviate almost everything, but one would think our slang version of this word is pretty obvious - but apparently not.

While us Aussies love to abbreviate almost everything, one would think our slang version of McDonald’s is pretty obvious to decipher.

But, apparently not.

Sydney-based TikToker Jeremy Franco put his American mates to the test — and let’s just say they had no idea what Macca’s meant.

In his clip, which has been viewed almost one million times, Jeremy asks his friends what they think “Macca’s” means.

It was the last response that Jeremy labelled the “strangest” — and we can understand why.

Jeremy begins the clip by asking his seven US friends: “If an Australian person said to you ‘let’s go Macca’s’ where are you going?”

First up was Nick, who thought the word referenced a bar.

“We’re going to go to the bar, we’re going to get some beers,” he said.

Caroline was pretty confident in her answer, guessing “board game”.

Claire thought it was a “cookie”, while Justin said it “sounds like Mac and Cheese”.

Tom thought it was something inappropriate, telling Jeremy, “I don’t think you’re allowed to say that word (here)”, while Kara was probably the closest, saying “getting chicken nuggets”.

But it was Addison’s response that had Jeremy — and fellow Aussies scratching their heads.

“Macca’s? That sounds like the stuff that gets stuck in your throat when you have a cough,” Addison explained, implying it sounded like “mucus”.

“Like *cough cough* I got a little Macca’s,” he said while demonstrating.

And it didn’t take long for Aussie to weigh in on the answers.

“Excuse me???? Was that guy referencing to MUCUS???” THE AUDACITY,” one very triggered Aussie wrote.

Others couldn’t understand how they didn’t know what Macca’s meant.

“I feel like crying right now Macca’s is Macca’s,” said another.

“I’m offended because I know what Mickey D’s is,” one woman said, referencing how American’s refer to McDonald’s.

“(So) why don’t they know what Maccas is,” she asked.

“Why did this make me so mad,” a second person commented, while a third joked: “I’m dying, what is their answers?”

However, as much as the guesses stunned some Aussies — particularly the “mucus” reference, it was how they pronounced Macca’s that was the topic of conversation.

“They were all pronounced wrong as well,” one Aussie TikTok user wrote.

“Why did they say makis,” said another.

“Their pronunciation: macus, mackers, maccus”, a third person wrote, while another triggered Aussie added: “Their pronunciation is a hate crime.”

The one thing Aussies did agree on was “chicken nuggets girlie” being the closest guess.

“I’ll allow chicken nuggets,” one person confirmed.

While Aussies love a shortened word, we’re not the only ones to abbreviate McDonald’s.

In Canada, they refer to the fast-food chain as “McDick’s”. In Germany it’s “Mekkes”, while the French say “McDo”.

If you’re in Hong Kong, it’s “Mak Kee” and it’s “McDona’s” in Mexico.

In Japan they say “Makku” and perhaps the country that requires the least amount of effort is Romania. They simply say “Mec”.
