American woman’s shock at difference between Target stores
An American woman has been left stunned at the difference between the department store chain in her home country and Australia’s “ugly” version.
An American woman has been left stunned at the difference between two stores with the same name in her home country compared to Australia.
The woman was visiting her partner in Melbourne when the pair decided to head to a local Target.
RaeAnna posted a video to TikTok where she can be seen in stitches after walking into the store, saying it was “bad”.
When asked what she thought of the Target, she said it was “like Walmart but worse”.
“It’s ugly, it’s so bad,” she said.
In the video’s caption, RaeAnna said: “Dear Australia … Our Target and your Target are not the same. We are not obsessed with your Target. We are obsessed with ours. I promise if you visit, 1. It will be fun. 2. You will be shocked. 3. Target is a magical place.”
Target’s US stores boast large supermarkets, something you absolutely don’t see in Australian Targets.
They also stock more brands – such as Olay and Levi’s – that Aussie stores lack. Some stores have Starbucks, an optometrist and opportunities to get an in-store facial.
In Australia, Target is owned by Wesfarmers, while the US version is now mostly held by institutional investors and was originally a subsidiary of Dayton-Hudson Corporation.
The TikTok video has been viewed more than 4.6 million times, with hundreds of viewers in agreeance with RaeAnna.
“As an American in Aus: Australian target is like American Kmart, and Australian Kmart is like American Target,” one said.
Another added: “Australian Target is soooo sad. They literally have nothing. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it for the first time.”
“As an Australian: correct. Our Target is just sad. American Target is a wonderland,” another commented.
One said: “Lived in Australia for a while and I can confirm it’s the equivalent of Kmart in the States. And weirdly enough their Kmart is like our Target.”
“Exactly! I’m not American but I’ve been to American Target and I TRULY disappointed when I entered Australian Target. Man! I had a high expectation,” one social media user commented on the video.
One said: “Wait so do the Australians think we are crazy when we talk about Target as a boujie lil treat?”
“Tbh, American Target is actually elite, they’re so big compared to ours,” another added.
