19yo Aussie reveals the ‘hardest’ thing about buying her first home

A 19-year-old has revealed the “hardest” thing about purchasing her own home and how she’s already paid off 65 per cent of her loan.

Accessing the ‘Australian dream’ of owning a home becoming ‘unaffordable’

Maddie Miller is 19 years old and has already paid off 65 per cent of her mortgage in outback Western Australia.

While most people her age are paying off their Afterpay orders, she has managed to reduce her mortgage to a tidy $160,000.

This is below the average mortgage debt. According to Finder, the average home loan in Australia in 2024 is a staggering $607,963.

Maddie makes between $25,000 and $30,000 a month through OnlyFans.

At 18, she decided to spend her money on something that could help her in the future, so she bought her first property after discovering she was eligible for the first homebuyer’s grant.

Maddie put down an $18,000 deposit on a small place in a mining town in Western Australia, with her repayments coming to $400 per week.

The whole thing has been a learning experience for the 19-year-old, who told news.com.au that, before she decided to buy, she had never even heard of a mortgage broker.

“I had the help of a mortgage broker but I definitely had to learn a few new things when I bought my house. I didn’t even know what a mortgage broker was when I started looking for a house to buy,” she said.

She said that she didn’t have anyone in her life who could explain the process of buying a home, so “I had to Google it”.

But, the most challenging part wasn’t just learning what a mortgage broker was.

Maddie admitted that the “hardest part was all the paperwork involved”, but she’s so glad she stuck with it because owning her home feels great.

“It feels amazing. I’m so grateful to own a home at this age,” she said, revealing she is now looking to purchase a second home.

Maddie lives alone and has had a bit of fun making the place her own.

While her peers are stuck negotiating whether they can hang up posters without their landlord’s permission, she is renovating her own home.

“I’m currently living in it and I’m also in the process of renovating it. I’ve painted pretty much the entire house and I’m in the process of choosing flooring and planning bathroom renovations before I buy my second house,” she explained.

She said the best part about the whole process is being about to decorate “everything how I want it” and feeling empowered to do whatever she wants with her property.

“I feel completely free to do what I want with my home,” she said, adding that she loves being able to decorate in her own style.

“Plus, there’s no one here to yell at me for leaving my clothes in the dryer,” she said.
