Macy Edwards in induced coma after Tasmanian car accident
Tens of thousands of dollars have been raised to help the family of a ‘larrikin’ young woman who remains in a coma nearly two weeks after a life-altering accident.
A young “larrikin” woman with “the world at her fingertips” is fighting for life nearly two weeks after a horror car crash.
Macy Edwards, 22, was heading home to Wynyard in Tasmania’s northeast from a tour guiding training cause in Launceston on March 28 when the accident occurred.
She has spent the days since in an induced coma in Hobart, as specialists assess and address her “significant list” of injuries – including brain and heart trauma; broken ribs, pelvis, and collarbone; as well as neck and tailbone fractures.
She will need to be flown to Melbourne once she is stable.
A Go Fund Me account set up has already raised more than $46,000 – well above the $40,000 goal – to support the Edwards family, including her mother Celisa who is a deputy mayor in the state’s north east.
The fundraiser’s organisers, Allie House and Fiona Pearce, said Ms Edwards is “just like her family, a truly people- and community-oriented soul”.
“She is a larrikin who is full of life, has a love of people, and is designed and destined for helping others,” they said.
“Celisa and (father) Eddie have immediately put their lives on hold to support Macy at this time.
“The journey ahead for Macy is completely unknown, but at this time any support we can provide the Edwards’ to be able to be present with Macy in Hobart during this fragile time is a gift.”
In an update on Friday, Ms House said Ms Edwards’ status was changing regularly and “right now, after every hurdle they’re immediately faced with another one”.
The organisers thanked the community for rallying around Ms Edwards, saying the family had been “so overwhelmed by the kindness of people that brings us to tears”.
“We didn’t expect anything from anyone and just needed to be here for Macy, but this is truly just so heartwarming and a relief during a really tough time. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” the family said through a statement.
