Woman’s hilarious response to UK prime minister Twitter mix-up
A random UK woman has been mistaken for the country’s new prime minister – and she’s thoroughly enjoying her time in the spotlight.
Britain just got its third female prime minister, Liz Truss, but several politicians have confused her for a random woman on Twitter.
As usual when a new leader in appointed, politicians take to social media to offer public congratulations. The problem is, many have been tagging a random English woman by the name of Liz Trussell.
The best part? Ms Trussell has had the most delightful responses to all her taggers, so much so that some new fans are now calling for her to actually be the new PM.
While the new Prime Minister and Ms Trussell share similar names and almost identical Twitter handles (the former being @trussliz and the latter being @liztruss), their lives are worlds apart.
The Swedish Prime Minister wrote a message of congratulations from her account, tagging Ms Trussell.
“Congratulations to @liztruss, who will assume the role of Prime Minister of Great Britain. Sweden and Great Britain will continue our deep and extensive co-operation. It is important to our citizens, economies and security,” she wrote.
Not missing a beat, Ms Trussell responded: “Looking forward to a visit soon! Get the meatballs ready.”
The tweet has since been taken down, and new fans aren’t happy.
“She took her tweet down and never even invited you to Sweden for your favourite treat? She’s being a poor sport about it. Come on, @swedishpm, show some meatballs!” one person replied.
British politician Caroline Lucas tagged Ms Trussell in a Twitter post criticising the new Prime Minister’s stance on Brexit and Covid.
“She’s campaigned as a right wing ideologue and will govern as such – which is a disaster for all of us,” she said in the tweet.
A random Twitter user responded, “I bet she likes cake,” to the negative tweet – referencing Marie Antoinette – to which Ms Trussell responded: “I love cake.”
After realising her mistake, Ms Lucas didn’t delete her original tweet, but instead followed up with: “Apologies, my previous tweet about #ToryLeadership should have been directed to @TrussLiz – not Liz Trussell who tweets at @LizTruss – tho [sic] frankly she’d probably make a better job of it.”
Plenty more politicians, news reporters, political fan pages and just random people sharing their thoughts all got sucked in by the Twitter tag, and Ms Trussell had a quip back for every single one.

She might not be the new prime minister of the UK, but she is proving herself the new queen of Twitter. As such, many are calling for her to be appointed to some sort of official position – even if it’s just the official Vogue cover shoot.
“What I am hoping for is that Vogue put you on the cover instead of this new PM,” wrote one Twitter user, to which Ms Trussell responded: “I’ve got the moves down.”
“Liz Trussell who has the @Liztruss Twitter handle looks like an absolute hun! Can we please have her as PM instead?” wrote another.
“There must be a way the new Prime Minister can be appointed via Twitter and the Queen accidentally appoints @Liztruss instead,” wrote yet another.
Ms Trussell responded with: “Me and Queen Liz would deffo be besties.”
