Mystery man who saved driver after his car crashed over canyon in Idaho revealed as Jason Warnock
THE identity of the mystery man who rescued a driver as his car dangled over a canyon has been revealed after the reluctant hero came forward.
IT WAS an act of incredible heroism captured on photos that went viral.
But the identity of the man who risked his life to pull a motorist from a car teetering on a cliff edge remained a mystery after he left the scene without giving his name.
Now the Good Samaritan has come forward.
Jason Warnock, 29, rose to international attention after he pulled over on the roadside in Lewiston, Idaho, after seeing an SUV crashed into a chain-link fence inches away from a deadly ten-metre drop.
Warnock ran up to a footbridge and after smashing the car window pulled the stricken motorist, Mathew Sitko, 23, to safety.
The dramatic moment was captured on camera along with photos of Warnock sitting talking to Sitko in the aftermath.
Mr Warnock told NBC: “I knew I had to get him out of the car.”
He said the vehicle was shaking every time Sitko moved.
“I was like, ‘Give me your hand, you know, because if this thing goes I want to have a hold of you so I can yank you.’”
Mr Warnock left when police arrived, not leaving his name because he said he didn’t need thanks. However, he decided to come forward when the photos went viral because “I know there’s no getting away from it until I talk to someone”.
“We made it. He’s all right. And that’s all that matters to me,” he told KHQ.
Police said Mr Sitko crashed the car deliberately after dropping his siblings at school.
“He was listening to a song on the radio, and some lyrics in the song convinced him that it was essentially his time to die. He just closed his eyes, took his hands off the wheel, and pressed the accelerator,” Lewiston interim Police Chief Roger Lanier said.
Following the crash Mr Sitko posted an elated message to his Facebook page. “Good morning everyone! I am truly blessed by God today!! Thank you God & Jesus for taking care of me!! I love you!”
