Carrie Bickmore brought to tears during emotional episode of The Project

IN A special episode of The Project to celebrate the launch of Carrie Bickmore’s new range of brain cancer charity beanies, things took an emotional turn.

IT WAS the emotional episode of The Project to celebrate the launch of co-host Carrie Bickmore’s new range of beanies, under her charity, Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer.

And while the show was filled with laughs and performances, it did take an emotional turn midway through — which brought Bickmore to tears.

Bickmore and co-host Waleed Aly introduced viewers to “the faces of brain cancer” with a moving segment showing a number of everyday people who have fought, or are currently fighting the disease.

The footage was aired as Aussie music star Katie Noonan performed a touching rendition of This Is Me.

“Brain cancer kills more people under 40 than any other cancer, more children in this country than any other disease,” Aly said before throwing to the segment.

“Approximately 1600 Australians are diagnosed each year and out of that 1600 it is estimated that 1300 will die from the disease.

“Currently there is no cure. And it bears repeating, because it’s scandalous; survival rates have not changed in 30 years.”

Bickmore said that the statistics were just that, and didn’t “convey the bravery, the determination and the fight of those who have battled and are currently battling brain cancer”.

Carrie Bickmore’s Beanies for Brain Cancer has so far raised $2.1 million.

The first day in May, which is brain cancer awareness month across Australia, marked the launch of Bickmore’s two brand new caps and beanie designs, which include styles for women, men and kids.

The cosy headwear has become one of the hottest items to have in winter and in recent years the collections have sold out within days.

Carrie wore a beanie during her Gold Logie acceptance speech in 2015, which was a moment that has gone down in television history — and her message was simple.

She lost her late husband Greg Lange to brain cancer following a 10-year battle with the disease, and she doesn’t want that pain to be experienced by anyone else so turned her own heartache into the charity, which aims to raise desperately needed funds for research.

The beanies are now on sale in Cotton On.

The mum-of-two has a simple message that she wants to spread with her charity.

“Let’s beat brain cancer together and try and save so many families from extraordinary pain,” she wrote.

Bickmore revealed at the conclusion of Tuesday’s episode that they had managed to raise $2.1, but that figure now sits at $3.9 million.
