Boy, 7, survives with fractured vertebrae after 5m horror fall into WA’s Joffre Gorge

A young boy has miraculously dodged death and severe injuries in a horror fall into a gorge north of Perth.

Daniel Ford, 7, suffered spinal fractures and a 30cm gash to his head after the fall but is recovering well.

A young boy has dodged life-threatening injuries following a horror fall into a gorge in WA’s north.

Daniel Ford, 7, suffered six fractured vertebrae and sustained a 30cm gash to his forehead after he plunged five metres into Joffre Gorge in Karijini National Park on October 2.

But those injuries weren’t enough to keep the beaming boy down, who has since recovered in Perth Hospital with no paralysis.

Daniel was on a trip with his family when he slipped into the gorge about 9am.

Emergency workers, including the WA Police, SES vertical rescue team, St John’s WA, and nearby workers from Fortescue Metals had to scale the popular gorge to winch the boy out of trouble.

The gorge is located more than 1400km north of Perth in remote national parkland.

Local rangers helped winch the seven-year-old to safety after he slipped and fell into the gorge.

First-aid trained John Wilson overcame his fear of heights to get the boy to safety, 9 News reports.

“He was in a significant amount of pain, but the tears, he held them back and he just managed to keep his composure,” Mr Wilson told reporters.

Daniel was flown to Perth Hospital for treatment.

In a photo posted on Facebook, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA said the boy was recovering well with no paralysis.

“We’re wishing him all the best for a speedy recovery,” the post reads.
