A Chinese builder has miraculously survived after she was skewered by an 80cm steel rod in a freak workplace accident.
The rod entered the construction worker’s body through her buttocks after she fell from a 3m platform at a site in China’s southern province Guangdong, with X-rays showing the bar protruding from her right shoulder.
Known only by her surname, Xiang, she survived the accident after doctors performed a three-hour surgery to remove the pole, which amazingly missed her vital organs and major blood vessels.
According to a report from Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ms Xiang was working at the site last Thursday when she fell by accident.
Her colleagues cut the metal bar so that she could be rushed from the building site to the Guangdong hospital.
An extraordinary X-ray shows the bar lodged across Ms Xiang’s entire torso and sticking out of her shoulder.
Chief medic at the hospital, Dr Li Jia, told Guangdong Southern Television following the three-hour emergency removal surgery that Ms Xiang’s was “fortunate” the rod had missed her vital organs.
“The operation went smoothly. She was fortunate that it had avoided the large blood vessels in the lungs and chest,” Dr Jia said.
“Although there was some bleeding, we quickly repaired it after pulling out the pole,” he told reporters.
Ms Xiang is said to be in a stable condition while recovering at the Guangdong hospital.
