Boy killed minutes after brother rushed to hospital in separate incident

A family has experienced a horrific series of events that saw a boy fatally hit by a car as his brother was rushed to hospital in a separate incident.

A Queensland family have been rocked by tragedy after a young boy was hit and killed by a car just minutes after his brother had to be rushed to hospital in a completely separate incident.

Liam Rainbird, 13, was attempting to cross a road on his scooter in Springfield Central, Ipswich, at about 3.30pm on Friday when he collided with a ute, police said.

Emergency services were called to the scene and rendered first aid but Liam tragically died a short time later.

At the time of the incident, Liam’s pregnant mum, Kellie Simpson, was taking his older brother, Bailey, to hospital after he suffered a nasty fall.

Liam Rainbird was tragically killed while riding his scooter home from school.

The boys’ aunty, Danni Simpson, posted to Facebook in the wake of the tragic news, revealing the incidents happened just “minutes apart”.

“This morning I woke to the news that my two nephews were involved in serious completely separate and unrelated incidents minutes apart,” she wrote the day after the incident.

“Bailey is currently being treated in hospital while Liam tragically passed away. My sister who is heavily pregnant has lost her 13-year-old son.

The boy’s mother is just two months away from giving birth, with Danni revealing “how excited” Liam was to be a big brother to his new sibling.

“Liam I’m at a loss for words to describe the heartache I feel knowing you were taken from our family too soon,” she said.

“You were the sweetest, most loving child who brought us happiness since the day you were born.”

Bailey spent two days in hospital recovering from his injuries and has since been sent home.

Danni revealed his own accident saw him suffer a lot of swelling, bruising and pain to his face, with the family now keeping a close eye on him at home.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up on behalf of the family in a bid to help with Liam’s funeral costs.

More than $14,000 has been raised in just four days, with Ms Simpson and Jamie Harrison, Liam’s stepdad, thanking everyone for their support.

“On behalf of Kellie Simpson and Jamie Harrison we would like to thank our community of friends and family for all their love, support and donations,” Danni wrote on the GoFundMe page.

“The kindness from loved ones and strangers have been overwhelming and helping to get through this tragedy.”

Liam’s father, Troy Rainbird, posted a tribute to his son on Facebook alongside two smiling photos of the 13-year-old.

“R. I. P little man!!!!! Never got the chance to say I love u, and now u are forever gone!!!!! I just need apart of u back, just so I feel like I still have apart of u with me,” he wrote.
