Astrologer Natasha Weber reveals ‘number one’ misconception people have about astrology

It’s an industry that cops “huge” scepticism — but one expert of 20 years has revealed the “number one” thing people get wrong about astrology.

whimnsplains: What Is Mercury Retrograde Anyway?

For Natasha Weber, the idea she’d one day become a leading Australian astrologer — whose cosmic updates, advice and readings would amass a following of more than 60,000 — never seemed crazy.

Born in the Melbourne Zoo — where her dad was the assistant director and her mum, a clairvoyant, helped to hand-rear “vicious” and “difficult” baby animals — catching reptiles and the occasional seance at the dining table courtesy of her mum was just part of her “everyday life”.

“We had a house in the zoo, and I really feel that that kind of conjured up my love of the rhythms of nature. That was my upbringing. And my mother … kind of got my appetite for anything mystic and spiritual going. It was just fairly accepted that that was pretty normal for our family,” Weber told news.com.au.

Despite attending the Victorian College of the Arts on a ballet scholarship, after the birth of her first child she “had an epiphany, or calling”.

“I just knew that there was something else out there for me. And it was an interesting time because I could feel that kind of churning in my gut, when you know there’s something more, but you can’t quite put your finger on it,” she recalled.

After some manifestation, that “something more” presented itself in the form of astrology.

In the two decades since, Weber had a second child, got divorced, and after 15 years with the Australian Academy of Astrology and Cosmobiology (AAAC), she launched AstroTash in 2017 which is “really about building a bridge between that really advanced astrology that I learned at the AAAC and the popular sun sign columns”.

While she often encounters “huge” scepticism when it comes to her line of work, Weber is quick to point out that astrology is a lot more logical than one might think when reading their horoscope in the daily newspaper — which she calls the “number one” misconception.

“I think there is a lot of things to support astrology. Also the fact that it’s been around for so very long and when you start to look at it, you really do see all of that to be — the proof is in the pudding,” Weber, a Gemini, explained.

When confronted with a sceptic, she added, she always starts “with the moon” — which sounds strange at first, but the more you think about it, the more it makes sense.

“The moon’s orbit around the earth is the same amount of days as a female’s menstrual cycle. In astrology the moon rules the bodily fluids. So there are lots of things to sort of align and support astrology just with the moon,” Weber said.

“The moon rules the tides, and the human body — an adult’s human body — is just over 60 per cent of water. So I think it sort of stands to reason that of course we’re going to be influenced if we’re made up of that much water and the moon does influence the water here on Earth — join the dots.”

She’s also quick to point out, asked whether she’s ever given someone an “incorrect” reading, that an astrologer is very different to a fortune teller (which she’s not).

“I’ve never had anyone say, ‘Oh, you said this and it didn’t happen’. The way I approach my work is it’s like a counselling session — I don’t predict the future,” Weber said.

“The beautiful thing about astrology is that I can provide the type of energetic environment that a person has to deal with. So I can make suggestions as to the best choices for that person to make under those circumstances, but it’s unethical to, and I would never say, that someone’s going to die, for example.”

Asked how her work has impacted her own life choices — particularly when it comes to romantic relationships and dating — Weber acknowledged that it does come into play, adding it’s the topic she’s questioned about most when someone comes in for a reading.

“Funnily enough, I would always compare my birth chart to whoever’s I was dating,” she laughed.

“And eventually I did find a beautiful partner who on the surface is very different to me — very different in what he does for a living, has a very different outward character — but I could see from the charts straight away that we were extremely similar and compatible … It was all teaming up really well and I thought, ‘Oh, this one’s a keeper’.”

A self-confessed staunch believer that “free will reigns supreme, even regarding astrology”, Weber said that now more than ever — given the state of the world — astrology is playing an important role in people’s lives.

“I think people are always searching. It’s in our human nature to be searchers, and astrology can provide answers but still allow you room to move to make your own choices,” she said.

“So the beauty with it is you can search and you can look for answers, and it helps you find deeper meaning within yourself and better self awareness.

“And when we’re more self aware, then we accept ourselves, I think, and you know through self awareness comes self acceptance, and then through self acceptance comes self love — and that’s really the ultimate goal.”
