‘Real-life Ferris Bueller’ facing seven years in jail for high school hack to inflate his marks, police say

AS HIGH school capers go, this one’s a doozy. Police say Daniel Soares, 17, was so worried about being busted that he ran away from home.

A US student accused of hacking into his high school’s computer system so he could inflate his own marks and change the class schedules of 300 other students now faces seven years in jail over the Ferris Bueller-like stunt.

Alleged mastermind Daniel Soares, 17, of Long Island, New York, was one of three Commack High School students charged in the hacking caper.

He was hit with the most serious charges, including two counts of burglary, and three counts of computer tampering and identity theft. He faces up to seven years behind bars if convicted.

The other two students, Erick Vaysman, 17, of Commack and Alex Mosquera, 17, of East Northport, face lesser charges because police allege they did not enter the school building but were aware of the hack, officials said.

Erick also asked Daniel to change a mark he thought was lower than he deserved, and Alex asked him to obtain another student’s schedule, officials say.

Vaysman was charged with computer tampering while Mosquera was charged with computer trespass. They face up to four years in prison each.

Soares apparently panicked and went missing after detectives executed a search warrant at his home on September 2, and his parents issued a desperate plea through the media in the hopes of finding him.

But he contacted them on Facebook a few days later to tell them he was OK and returned home.

One police source likened Soares’ antics to Matthew Broderick’s high-school wise-guy character in the 1986 flick Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

The three teens surrendered with their parents and lawyers overnight and were released without bond after their arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip.

A school source described the three — all seniors — as good students.

And school officials, who first detected the breach in July, were able to fix the schedules to prevent any problems on the first day of school.

In a statement on its website, the district said it was cooperating with the police in the ongoing investigation and had beefed up computer security at the school.
