Mum makes 18-year-old sign lease, pay $146 rent to live at home
A woman in the US has come under fire for making her 18-year-old daughter sign a lease in order to live at home, as well as pay $146 a month in rent.
A woman in the US has come under fire for making her 18-year-old daughter sign a lease in order to keep living at home – and to pay almost $150 each month in rent.
The unnamed Oklahoma mother shared footage of her daughter Jada to TikTok, captioned: “When your 18-year-old decides to stay at home.”
“Setting [her] up for success,” said text overlaying the footage of Jada signing the lease agreement which includes rent of $US100 ($A146) per month.
The video – which clocked up more than 1.5 million views – sparked a heated debate among users on the social media platform, with many divided over whether the woman was treating her daughter fairly.
“Yikes my parents did this to me and it only created trauma for me. Thankfully I made eight figures and don’t have to struggle any longer,” one woman wrote.
“My parents did this and we no longer talk! So good luck I guess,” another commented.
“Unless you’re saving that money to give them when they do move out, no way. I’d like to see an 18-year-old have a job [that] pays enough to live in this economy,” said a third.
“Yikes – already hard enough being a kid and not at all like it used to be. Girl, get out of there!” wrote another.
“No way. My parenting and support doesn’t stop at 18. As long as they are in school or working, they can stay with us. Love isn’t a condition,” one user said.
In response to the “hate comments”, the woman took to TikTok again with a video where she attempted to explain her motivation for the controversial action.
“I was a single mum at 16 and my parents didn’t set me up for success. I had to fight for every single thing I have,” she began.
The mum-of-six said she didn’t want her children to “depend” on her for “anything” – saying that “everything” she does instead “prepares” her children for the “real world”.
“That’s the only bill [Jada] pays – no car payment, no insurance, no cellphone bill,” she added.
The “rent” she pays goes towards “utilities, room, food and everything else”.
Jada herself even filmed a video on her mother’s account, saying her mother’s request (to sign a lease agreement) was “hard for her to comprehend” at first.
But, she said, she came around to the idea because she’ll have to pay more rent “sooner or later” when she moves into an actual property.
She said her mother was simply “getting [her] ready” for the future, and she asked users not to judge her mum based off the original video.
