A Sydney Catholic primary school shut due to a student contracting Covid-19 is hoping to resume classes after the July holidays as its community isolates and awaits more potential cases.

St Charles’ Catholic Primary School in Waverley shut on Tuesday after a year 3 student tested positive to coronavirus.

The student was one of 10 new locally acquired cases of Covid-19 recorded on Tuesday.

Seven cases were recorded after 8pm on Monday and will be included in Wednesday’s numbers.

Six of the later-recorded cases were household contacts of previous cases who have been in isolation; however, the St Charles’ student is not linked to the Bondi cluster.

Parents rushed to pick their children up from the school, which shut immediately and had staff and close contacts isolate and get Covid-19 tests.

“Sydney Catholic Schools can confirm that a year 3 student at St Charles’ Catholic Primary School Waverley has returned a preliminary positive result for COVID-19,” Sydney Catholic Schools released via a statement.

“We are working closely with the Ministry of Health to communicate its advice to our parent community.”

The statement also said students and staff who had been close contacts were isolating and the school was liaising with NSW Health to provide site testing.

St Charles’ has begun remote learning for the school for the remaining three days of term 2.

The school aims to return when term 3 begins on July 13.

“It is anticipated the school will reopen with face-to-face learning at the beginning of term 3 and we will continue to work closely with the (NSW Health) to ensure that all necessary health advice is adhered to and continue to liaise closely with our parent community,” the statement read.
