Better Education results reveal best performing schools in Australia
Australia’s best performing schools have been revealed – and there are plenty of surprises.
The scores are out, revealing which Australian schools are best in class, and which have climbed the rankings since the previous results.
The Better Education analysis of 2022 academic outcomes has ranked the top government and independent schools across Australia.

NEW SOUTH WALES

The best primary schools in NSW have been named – and low-cost government schools make up exactly half of the top 50.
The Better Education analysis of 2022 academic outcomes also reveals that Christian – and especially Catholic schools – also dominate the lists relative to their size.
Schools in Sydney’s north and northwest suburbs performed well compared to other suburbs – while some government primary schools, such as Beecroft Public, ranked seven, jumping ahead of expensive private schools like Knox Grammar, ranked nine.
The number one spot and a perfect score of 100 was awarded to the elite Sydney Grammar School, which has Preparatory Schools at both St Ives and Edgecliff with fees for kindergarten starting at $27,195 a year.

The best primary schools in Victoria have been named, with more than 20 government schools topping the list.
The Better Education analysis of 2022 academic outcomes shows private primary schools including Camberwell Grammar School, Presbyterian Ladies’ College and Camberwell Girls Grammar School took the top three spots, with each receiving a perfect score of 100.
But three state schools including Serpell Primary School in Templestowe, Beverley Hills Primary School in Doncaster East and Oakleigh South Primary School were also in the top 10 and scored 100.

More than 30 public schools have been named alongside some of the state’s powerhouse colleges to be ranked in Queensland’s top 150.
Independent schools specialist website Better Education has revealed Queensland’s best schools a compilation of both government and private schools between years 7-10.
The selective Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology retained the top spot in 2022 with a perfect score of 100.
The Toowong-based school had full marks for English and Maths.
It was closely followed by Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Brisbane State High School, Somerset College, Ormiston College, Whitsunday Anglican School and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School all with perfect scores.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The best performing high schools in South Australia have been named in new rankings which show both large ‘super schools’ and tiny campuses are achieving top results.
The state’s largest public school, Glenunga International High School, shares top spot with prestigious private institutions Pembroke School and St Peter’s Collegiate Girls School.
All three scored a maximum 100 points in the 2022 analysis of academic outcomes by Better Education.
There are 10 public schools among the 45 campuses listed, alongside private schools which charge as much as $29,400 for Year 12 tuition.
Large campuses such as Glenunga (about 2250 students), Adelaide High School (about 1840) and Brighton Secondary School (about 1760) are named alongside small sites including The Hills Montessori School (about 170) and Southern Montessori at O’Sullivan Beach (about 200).

WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Government schools continue to punch above their weight in the west, with Perth Modern School leading the charge against independent high school education centres.
Public schools occupy three of the top four spots on the Better Education rankings system for 2022.
However private schools, which hold six of the top 10 positions, dominate the top 50, with only 14 government schools making the list.

Taroona High School has bucked the trend on the Apple Isle, being the only public high school to make the top 10 in the Better Education rankings for 2022.
In a list dominated by private schools, only three government schools were able to make the top 25.

NORTHERN TERRITORY
Northern Territory’s biggest high schools continue to dominate the Better Education rankings.
An analysis of the 2022 results showed the top two spots - The Essington School Darwin and Kormilda College - were occupied by schools with more than 800 enrolments.
Seven of the top 10 from the NT were non-government schools.

Public school have their work cut out for them to catch their private school counterparts, according the the Better Education review of 2022 high schools in the ACT.
Telopea Park School (No.6) is the only government school to make the top six.
