NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has teared up as he revealed he had to miss his son’s first father and son school camp because of the demands of his job.

“I drove him there last night, all the dads are there with their kids. I had to drop him off, set him up … and leave,” he told Nine News in an interview at his home alongside wife Helen on Monday.

He said it was hard to not join his son William.

“It would have been great to be there,” Mr Perrottet said.

“I think it’s a real challenge that all parents face today – balancing work and family life.”

The father of seven tries to spend quality time with his children when he can.

“When he can have downtime, he makes sure he’s here and present, He’ll spend hours making a Lego ship with Willsy or playing basketball with the kids,” Mrs Perrottet said.

Mr and Mrs Perrottet also spoke of the three miscarriages the couple had experienced, which prompted changes to miscarriage leave in the public service.

“We’ve lost three little babies, which is pretty horrific,” Mrs Perrottet said.

“I was horrified that you had to take sick leave; it should be bereavement leave. I just lost a member of my family.”

Mr Perrottet is facing a tough test to lead the Coalition to a fourth-straight term at the March 25 state election against Labor’s Chris Minns.
