Newborn baby declared dead in Quibdo in Colombia found alive after 10 hours

A NEWBORN baby came back from the dead more than 10 hours later when her father came to collect her in a box from the morgue and heard a sound.

A NEWBORN baby came back from the dead more than 10 hours after being sent to the morgue.

The baby was declared dead 35 minutes after her mother, Jenny Hurtado, had a Caesarean Section in San Francisco de Asis hospital in Quibdó in western Colombia.

Hurtado was 27 weeks pregnant when she was taken to the hospital on November 13, UK website Mail Online reported, citing Colombian website Semana.

The baby was declared dead and placed in a box to be taken to the morgue, while the mother received treatment.

Staff at the hospital then waited for the woman's husband, a fisherman, to collect the box.

When the baby's father arrived more than 10 hours later, an attendant handed the baby over and both father and attendant heard a noise from within the box.

It was the softest of cries and realising the baby was alive they contacted doctors, who confirmed she was alive and arranged for her to be transferred for treatment at Santa Teresita del Niño Jesus clinic in the capital Bogota.

The newborn, named Milagros (Miracles), remains in intensive care for treatment to her underdeveloped lungs.

Her mother remains in the hospital in Quibdó.

Specialist doctor Javier Zagarra told Semana that the mistaken death declaration could be down to a soft heart beat at the time of the birth.

"In some cases the heart movements are not perceptible even though the newborn is alive, they can declare it dead," he said.

"When they wrap the baby in a sheet, upon receiving warmth, the baby can then revitalise."
