The Melbourne childcare centre where multiple children were treated by paramedics for a suspected poisoning says it does not know how the kids got sick.

A dozen children had a reaction after they reportedly accidentally drank cleaning fluid at the Chabad Glen Eira centre in Caulfield on Wednesday, with paramedics called just before 3:30pm to assess the 12 toddlers.

All were in a stable condition and no one was taken to hospital, Ambulance Victoria said.

The centre said emergency services were called after multiple children presented with a rash and mild fever.

A doctor also attended to assess the children.

“At this stage, the cause of the symptoms is unknown,” the centre said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

“The children were all assessed and monitored onsite.

“Symptoms subsided and all were sent home with their parents.

“As a precaution, all children who attended the centre were sent home with wristbands and the local hospitals have been briefed.”

The centre said it is working with Glen Eira City Council health officials to determine the cause and keeping the Department of Education updated.

“We will provide further advice as it comes to hand,” it said.
