Mum shamed for ‘unhealthy’ item in 3yo’s lunch box

A mother who was shamed by her three-year-old’s school over the “unhealthy” snack she packed in her son’s lunch box has shared her outrage.

An American mother has revealed how she sent her three-year-old son to school with some Pringles – only for the school to send back a “passive aggressive” note.

Megan Peavey, from the state of New Hampshire, United States, took to popular social media platform TikTok to claim she had been “snack-shamed” by her toddler’s school.

“I sent my son to school with Pringles, which is a very age-appropriate snack for a three-year-old,” she said.

But, when she picked her son up, she found a note written on the “trash” that had once stored the chips.

“Please help us make healthy choices at school,” the note, written in texter, on the container.

Megan said the message “snack-shamed” her and her three-year-old by writing the “passive aggressive” comment.

The mother said she messaged the school about what was written on the empty container, explaining to them at her house the family doesn’t label food into “healthy” and “unhealthy”.

“That starts eating disorders,” she said, asking other parents what they would do in her situation.

In a follow up video, she said she spoke to the director of the school about how she felt about the note.

“I was told it was passive aggressive of me to keep sending Pringles after the note, but I don’t consider Pringles to be this ‘unhealthy’ snack,” she said.

“I consider things like Doritos, Cheetos and Milky Way bars to be unhealthy.”

She added she often packs items such as granola bars with the chips, adding she wished the school just communicated directly to her rather than leaving the note.

Megan said the school didn’t give an apology, and she was later told there was no longer a spot for her child in the school’s summer program.

“I walked downstairs and I just checked my son out – we’re done there,” she said, adding that she wasn’t posting for attention but to share the reality of parenting.

Megan said she works, and her husband works in law enforcement so often has crazy hours, and sometimes it’s easier to throw in a container of Pringles rather than washing, cutting up and labelling the fruit.

“That is so much more work,” she said.

Other parents on the app defended the mother, saying they would have been petty in her situation.

“Ohhhhh he’d be going with a FULL can on the next day with ‘no thank you’ written on the side in bigggg bold letters,” one social media user said.

Another said: “I’m a pre-K teacher. Never would I ever tell a family to ‘make healthy choices’. My girls get a bag of chips with their sandwiches along with fresh fruit.”

“I sent a box of individually packaged cookies for my son’s class. That afternoon the teacher sent out a note about donating healthy snacks,” one said.
