All sizes of Caprice Australia’s light up thongs have been recalled from Big W due to concerns about a potentially deadly defect with the product.

The eight varieties of thongs feature designs from beloved kids brands, like Barbie, Spider-Man, Star Wars, Frozen, L.O.L Surprise! OMG and Minecraft.

The defect stems from two button batteries that the product contains, with authorities concerned the compartment containing them may be exposed over time and make the batteries accessible.

If this happens young children could eat the batteries, potentially causing severe internal burn injuries that could result in serious illness or death.

The button batteries are also a choking hazard for young children.

The thongs were sold at Big Ws across Australia and online for nearly two years.

Customers have been advised to stop wearing the thongs immediately and return them to any Big W store in Australia for a full refund.
