Four new members to join The Wiggles in a nod to cultural diversity

One of the world’s most famous children’s groups has announced a major change, with a number of new members added to its line up.

A new-look Wiggles will soon take to the stage as the iconic children’s group moves toward being more culturally diverse.

Four new members will join the ensemble including three women – two of whom will wear pants – and a man.

The new members will join existing crew, Anthony, Emma, Lachy and Simon.

The first is Tsehay Hawkins who will wear red. She’s only 15 and originally from Ethiopia.

She has had a passionate love for The Wiggles since a young age.

A new-look Wiggles has been revealed.

“Tsehay loves to shuffle dance and say g’day to everyone she meets. Her favourite colour is red,” her profile reads.

Her Instagram page is full of videos of her dancing in a variety of styles. She is a five-time world champion in Latin dancing.

The second is 24-year-old Evie Ferris, who will be wearing blue, including blue ballet slippers. She is an Indigenous Australian and also a yoga teacher.

“Evie wears blue ballet shoes, and her favourite colour is blue. She loves dancing, doing yoga and reading,” her profile on The Wiggles website reads.

Kelly Hamilton, 45, is the third female new addition to the team and will wear yellow alongside original Wiggle Emma. She formerly danced with the group and will ride a skateboard.

Evie Ferris is an indigenous Australian and ballet dancer.

The only male joining the line-up is John Pearce from music group Justice Crew. He has Filipino heritage and a background in fitness.

Three non-binary characters are already included in The Wiggles lineup including a police officer who is largely non-verbal, a unicorn who likes the sun and an emotional, shy hand puppet.

Founding blue Wiggle Anthony Field is the brains behind the new ensemble as the group looks to shift and evolve toward an ethnically diverse line-up.

Mr Field told NCA NewsWire the new additions had been years in the making.

“I’d been thinking about it for the last couple of years and there’s no better time than now,” he said.

“Morally we have to do this.

Dorothy and Tsehay will feature on Fruit Salad TV.

“I looked around the world and I thought: ‘we have to reflect our audience’. Our audience is not just one culture, we want children to see a mirror of themselves.

“After 30 years at the Wiggles, the day I move on I would be very happy I brought about this change.

“I hope people, mums and dads as well, will feel included.”

The new Wiggles will feature on Fruit Salad TV via YouTube next month.
