We've seen Harper Beckham's first steps, Flynn Bloom breastfeeding and Maxwell Drew in her first bikini all courtesy of snap-happy mothers.

But are celebrities trading on their tots for an instant profile boost, or are they just proud parents?

Parenting expert, psychologist and family specialist Dr Justin Coulson says while celebrities understand the attention they garner when posting pictures online, they're also executing a form of power.

"A lot of celebrities are using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to wrestle back the control and they get to be the narrator of their own story rather than being worried that the magazines or the paparazzi are goign to do it for them," Coulson told news.com.au.

"There's also probably an element of, 'if I publish these photos myself, the paparazzi aren't going to chase me any more because all of these photos are out in the public domain, there's going to be alot less interest from magazines buying them because I'm the one publishing them and no one will profit off my kid'.

But it's not only pictures of the tiny tots that celebs are drawing attention to, it's pictures of their baby bumps as well.

Countless number of celebrity mums-to-be have flaunted their blossoming bellies in bikinis and posted their bumps online, giving fans a glimpse into their nine-month-long journey.

Current celebrities like Gisele Bundchen, Megan Fox, Amber Rose, Camila Alves and Marisa Miller have all flaunted their pregant bellies in bikinis.

Why do you think celebrities post photos of their children so regularly? Do you think celebrities are trading on their children in a way, knowing what sort or publicity these shots will get?
