Theon and Daenerys: America’s most popular baby names revealed

WE PITY the next generation of Americans. The results are in and some very strange names appeared on birth certificates in 2013.

Meet baby 'Cheese'?

THE results are in — Theon and Daenerys have made the Social Security Administration’s annual list of popular baby names, along with Wreck-It Ralph’s Vanellope and Russell Crowe’s Noah.

Only in America.

From girls being called Andrew to boys being called Isabella, 2013’s most popular baby names have proved to just as entertaining as 2012’s.

Heavily influenced by pop culture — and specifically, Game of Thrones — there were 1135 children named Arya last year, as well as 241 named Khaleesi, 67 called Daenerys, 59 Snows, 15 Theons, eight Briennes, and five named Robb — with a double b, just like the infamous Stark himself.

And in an apparent nod to the long-awaited Russell Crowe epic Noah, the biblical moniker topped the most popular boy names for the first time, making it the first new boys name at number one since 1960 outside of Jacob or Michael.

The most popular boy’s name list had a decidedly biblical bent, with Jacob, Daniel, Elijah, James, Benjamin, Matthew and Joseph all making the top 20, followed by the likes of Gabriel, Christian, Cross, Gospel and even Psalms.

For girls, Sophia topped the list for the third year in a row — a coincidence, given Sofia Vergara is the most popular and highest paid television star in Hollywood? We think not.

Sticking within the realms of television, the name Daleyza had the biggest jump in popularity, which the SSA attributes to the “popular Spanish-language cable TV series, Larrymania ... Daleyza is the young daughter of Larry Hernandez, an American regional Mexican singer and reality TV star. The name increased in popularity by more than 3000 spots, so the show undoubtedly had an influence.”
