The baby names at risk of becoming extinct … so is yours on the list?

It’s no secret that baby names go through trends but there are a string of traditional monikers that are set to disappear altogether.

The best bogan baby names of 2020

When it comes to picking a baby name, it’s all too easy to get sucked into trends – especially when there seem to be little Olivers and Olivias everywhere we go.

But as superhero and astrology-inspired monikers continued to rise in popularity, other more classic names have fallen by the wayside, The Sun reports.

Chances are this little boy isn’t called Roger – one of the names tipped to soon be extinct.

And according to parenting website BabyCentre, there are 28 on the verge of becoming totally extinct – so is yours at risk?

Every year, tens of thousands of parents register their baby name with them – which is how BabyCentre monitor the monikers falling in and out of fashion.

Although the name Piers hasn’t broken into the top 100 for a few years running, not one set of parents have registered it on BabyCentre in 2021 … yet.

What’s more, it seems mums and dads are steering clear of Dwight, Duane and Daryl – which they claim were all popular in the ’80s.

But it’ll come as less of a surprise that no little boys were registered with the old-fashioned names Leslie, Norman, Maurice, Royston and Hubert.

Baby names are constantly evolving with many popular with previous generations being phased out.

As for girls, it’s the names that were most popular in the 1950s and 1960s that are at risk of going extinct in coming years.

Glenda, Bertha, Pauline, Doreen and Gertrude are among the least popular 14 names on BabyCentre.

Instead, modern mums and dads are favouring monikers like Elsie – which made the top 30 – for a more vintage feel.

Sarah Redshaw, UK Managing Editor for BabyCentre, said: “Parents don’t just reflect popular trends with their baby name picks, what they don’t choose can be just as revealing.

“There are names on our extinct list that we might expect to be falling out of favour, but could make great unique names like Maud, Edna and Muriel, Vernon, Elliott and Maurice. Of course, Piers could be on the list for reasons other than fashion!

It’s predicted there will be an increase in the number of baby names inspired by superhero movies.

“We predict there will be a rise in superhero names as Marvel and DC films continue to dominate and inspire many more parents to call their baby Thor, Thanos or Sylvie. And after the latest Marvel movie Eternals hit cinemas in early November we could even see boys named Ikaris and baby girls called Thena and Sersi.

“But despite all this inspiration it can take a long time for parents to decide on a name. Our poll showed that 8 per cent of parents were still undecided about what to call their baby more than a week after they were born.

“And however long it takes to decide, many parents – nearly 13 per cent – end up regretting their name choice.”
