Number one boys’ name marks eighth year as most popular pick

Fresh data has revealed the one baby name that Aussie parents can’t seem to get enough of.

Parents reveal their biggest baby name regrets

The top baby names from 2022 have been revealed in one Australian state with little surprise at the lead picks for both boys and girls.

Oliver has been unveiled as the most popular boys’ name for the eighth consecutive year, while Charlotte is set to reclaim the mantle as the most popular girls’ name after placing third in 2021.

The records kept by the NSW registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages showed strong consistency on the previous year, Attorney-General Mark Speakman said.

“After finishing third in 2021, Charlotte is well placed to finish top of the charts, joining Oliver, which has been the number one baby boys’ name in NSW since 2014,” Mr Speakman said.

“Amelia, Isla and Mia have also made the top 10 for several years running, along with Jack,

Noah, and William.”

Selecting a baby name was one of the most important decisions parents could make during a “joyous time”, Mr Speakman said.

“It’s always interesting to see which names are the most popular each year,” he said.

“We welcome the state’s newest residents and congratulate all NSW families who brought a little bundle of joy into their home in 2022.”

Digital Government Minister Victor Dominello said parents could register the birth of a child online or by post using a paper form.

During 2022, 83,411 babies were registered in NSW, which was 6,648 fewer than the year before – but parents had 60 days to register their newborn which could mean some December births are yet to be recorded.

“While not compulsory, the overwhelming majority of parents also order a paper birth

certificate for their child at the time of birth,” Mr Dominello said.

“When the first of its kind NSW Digital Birth Certificate is launched later this year, families will also benefit from having secure access to their child’s identity documents anywhere, at any time.”
