Instagram has finally moved into 2015 and will no longer ban accounts of people who post photos of breastfeeding, stretch marks or post-mastectomy scarring.

Instagram updated its community guidelines late last week after pressure from the online community.

Instagram’s guidelines now reflect those of its owner Facebook, which also clarified its community guidelines last month to allow breastfeeding photos.

“We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram,” Instagram’s new guidelines say.

“This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks.

“It also includes some photos of female nipples, but photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too.”

Last week, a Facebook photo of a mother breastfeeding her child while on the toilet was shared hundreds of thousands of times online.

This pic drew lots of debate from parents online.

While some parents said the photo was a case of TMI, others jumped to the mother’s defence.

“I find it so interesting that people have an issue with her breastfeeding in the bathroom of her own home, yet way too many people have the expectation that a woman should breastfeed in a bathroom in a public place,” commented one Facebook user.

Another simply said: “This is the realest pic I’ve ever seen.”
