Fears heighten for mother of newborn baby abandoned in western Sydney backyard after more than 24 hours pass since search began.

The shocking discovery was made when the homeowners heard cries coming from their Blacktown backyard not long before 2.40pm on Friday.

Police hold serious concerns for the baby girl’s mother who they believe has yet to admit herself to hospital after giving birth and remains missing.

“Don’t be scared,” NSW Police Acting Inspector David McInerney said before stressing the mother will not face any trouble from police if she comes forward.

“Please contact us or attend hospital or ring an ambulance.”

He said childbirth can be very “traumatic” and any woman that has given birth and abandoned their child within hours must need help.

“We are concerned about her health, safety and wellbeing and just want to help,” Inspector McInerny said.

Emergency services were alerted that a baby that couldn’t have been more than a few hours old had been found at the Girra Road home on Friday afternoon.

Paramedics rushed to the scene where they treated the baby, who despite having been left alone at the property for up to two hours appeared to be in good health.

It is not known if the baby was left in the backyard with any blankets or coverings.

They rushed her to Blacktown Hospital for further tests and she has since been given a clear bill of health.

Investigators are combing the area for any sign of childbirth and are searching for any witnesses in the area who may have noticed a woman in the neighbourhood anytime after midday.

They believe she would have appeared distressed and was likely visibly pregnant.

Police are unsure of the child’s ethnicity but the baby did have a fairer complexion.
