Couple’s move to relocate to Brisbane pays off for triplets
A Queensland couple will be able to take their triplets home for Christmas following a brave decision.
A Queensland couple’s bold decision to temporarily relocate 500km from their regional home to Brisbane has assured the healthy delivery of their triplets, who are heading home for Christmas.
Josephine and Cohen Nunn were surprised when an early pregnancy scan in the small community of St George revealed the couple were expecting three babies.
Mrs Nunn, a doctor herself, said she saw two babies on the ultrasound screen at the seven-week scan before a spotting a third.
They decided to pack up their bags and head to the city at 23 weeks gestation for close observation and regular scans given the heightened risk of carrying triplets.
And at 34 weeks, on November 10, three little boys — Louis, Winston and Maverick — were born before spending one month in Brisbane’s Mater Mothers’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit and Special Care Nursery.
“The risk of preterm labour is higher for women pregnant with triplets, and we didn’t want to put our babies at risk,” Mrs Nunn said.
“But we’re really excited to have them home now. It will be special to have our three little blessings home for Christmas.”
The precautionary approach was vindicated for Mrs Nunn after she was admitted to the Mater Mothers’ Hospital at 31 weeks after a scan revealed her cervix was shortening.
“Thankfully, my cervix held out for another three weeks after that scan, which was amazing, given I was carrying 8.5kg of babies, placenta and fluid,” she said.
The boys arrived weighing between 1990 and 2380 grams, becoming the seventh set of triplets born at the hospitality so far this year.
“They’re small and they’re preterm, but they’re really healthy and doing really well,” Mrs Nunn said.
“I’m overwhelmingly happy, so stoked and full of love.”
