‘Astonishing’: Fifi Box praised for breastfeeding on radio

Fifi Box has described returning to work as “wrenching” and “hard” — but she’s being praised for this refreshingly real parenting moment.

Radio host Fifi Box returned to work this week after giving birth and said it has been “wrenching” and “hard”.

But the second-time mum is being praised for her “awesome” move after breastfeeding her newborn daughter Daisy during her live radio show.

Box returned to her Fox FM Melbourne breakfast show on Monday morning after giving birth to second daughter Daisy three months ago.

At one stage during the show Box, who is working from home, asked her co-hosts Brendan Fevola and Byron Cooke to carry on as she went to get a crying Daisy.

“Hang on guys, continue the conversation without me. I’ll be back in a second,” she said.

Box returned with Daisy in her arms and began breastfeeding her daughter, before carrying on with the show as normal.

Video of the sweet moment has since been shared on social media where it’s racked up tens of thousands of views.

Speaking about it on Wednesday, Box said she was “overwhelmed” by the supportive messages from people.

“I’ve been so lucky because everyone here at Fox, including you two, have been so supportive and making this so easy for me,” she told Cooke and Fevola.

“And we did have Daisy pop in on Monday and have a feed in the middle of the show … she just popped on and we kept forging ahead, and we uploaded a video and I put it on my Instagram and I got so many messages.

“I wanted to thank all the people that wrote messages of support and in particular what I was interested in was how people were so amazed at how great Fox was.”

Box said she was also saddened to hear stories from other mums who had not had the same experience when they returned to work.

“It got me thinking, I feel for women particularly who work at companies or who have jobs where they’re not necessarily supported,” she said.

Listeners of the show took to Box’s Instagram to praise her for juggling being a mother with her job so soon after giving birth.

“Fifi Box, you astonishing creature! Keeping an infant alive, quiet, fed and happy AND performing on breakfast radio, all on about two minutes sleep. I award you ten golden nipples,” Zoe Foster Blake commented.

“Good on you Fi Fi, in your dressing gown, how we all want to be at work! Love this so much, the Fox has been so great this year with working mums,” another wrote.

“This is the best video I’ve seen in ages. What an awesome employer to give you the option to work from home. What you have done is help normalise breastfeeding,” another person said. “The way your co-workers respond also shows that is such a normal and natural part of motherhood.”

“The definition of multi-tasking. Women run the world,” another commented

‘A REALLY PRIVATE JOURNEY’

In February while on The Project, Box revealed she was expecting a second child via an anonymous sperm donor and tearfully spoke of her struggle to get pregnant .

“This is really exciting news for me and (daughter) Trixie obviously, our little family. It’s just so good to be able to talk about it because it’s been a really private journey,” she said.

Box, 42, recounted how she had decided to try and have another child nearly three years ago but had been given a “very rude shock” when she found out her chances of conceiving.

“I made the decision that the right path for me and my little family was to go through IVF with the help of a donor,” she said.

“So I went to the clinic, I think most women in their late 30s would know that when you walk in to see an IVF specialist and you’re shown the graph, that gives you a very rude shock about your chances.

“From then on it was a case of fingers crossed, and I had my eggs retrieved and all of this is happening. (But) you don’t share it necessarily because you don’t know if you’re going to have any success.

“I was given a seven per cent chance of having a baby, so it’s still a bit of a shock for me, it’s still sinking in but we’re just really thrilled.”

Box broke the news she was pregnant by sharing a cute Instagram video of her telling five-year-old Trixie she was expecting.

Box confirmed former Ironman Grant Kenny was the father of Trixie in an Instagram post in 2016, after years of keeping it a tight secret.

The pair had enjoyed a brief romance in 2012 and are said to be on good terms.
