A SOUTH Carolina couple has travelled to Hawaii to give birth to their child in a dolphin-assisted delivery.

Adam Barrington, 29 and his wife Heather, 27, will stay and study with Star Newland, the founder of The Sirius Institute, a group which is aiming to 'dolphinise the planet'.

Mrs Barrington told the Charlotte Observer that they were inspired by the book The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life by Drunvalo Melchizedek which talks about harnessing positive energy to reach better awareness.

The couple has been spending time in the water with a pod of dolphins in Pohoa, Hawaii, hoping to form a bond with them before the birth of their son, Bodhi.

"It is about reconnecting as humans with the dolphins so we can coexist in this world together and learn from one another,” said Mrs Boddington. "Having that connection with the pod of dolphins anytime - even if the birth doesn’t happen in the water - still brings peace, comfort and strength to the mother and baby during labour."

"It’s total relaxation for the mother," said Mr Boddington. "Dolphins are very intelligent and healing which in turn calms mother and baby for the whole process," adds Mrs Boddington.

The Sirius Institute says it is receiving about three to four requests per week from people wanting to have a dolphin-assisted birth
