‘Stolen’ pug owner charged with making false complaint but Egg still missing
POLICE have charged a Sydney man who said his pet pug was stolen at knifepoint with making a false complaint, but they aren’t any closer to finding Egg.
THE devastating story of stolen Sydney pug Egg, which stole hearts across the world, was made up, according to police.
Animal lovers were thrown into panic earlier this month with news a man’s 14-week old pet dog named Egg had been stolen at knifepoint by a trio of brazen thieves.
Police made a desperate public appeal to find the pup, but his owner was said to be too devastated to face the public at the time. He’s now been charged with making a false complaint.
Police responded to the apparent emergency at 10.30pm on February 9, dispatching concerned crews to a street corner at Sydney Olympic Park.
Officers were told that three unknown men armed with knives approached the alleged victim, a 29-year-old Sydney man, who was walking his baby black pug.
The man claimed the men demanded he hand over his wallet and backpack, and also made off with Egg.
Police received detailed descriptions of the alleged thieves, described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, in their 30s, one bald and one sporting a goatee.
News reports spread wide and quickly and sparked panicked searches for the tiny dognapping victim.
But after investigations, including an interview with Egg’s owner last night at Auburn police station, police decided the story didn’t add up.
The 29-year-old man has been charged with making a false report of armed robbery and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court in April.
Police advise however concerns for Egg should not be laid to rest.
The whereabouts of Egg remains unknown.
Anyone with information of the puppy’s whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make an online report.
