A VEGETABLE garden provides endless joy for most homeowners lucky enough to have one.

Yet one council, Miami Shores Code Enforcement Board in Florida, has decided to ban vegetable gardens in the front yards to "protect the distinctive character of the Miami Shores Village", Florida Watchdog reported.

Fruit, trees and even plastic flamingos were deemed appropriate for front yards, but not any vegetables.

Hermine Ricketts and her husband, Tom Carroll, who have grown a vegetable patch in their front yard for the past 17 years, were clearly in the board's sights.

They were visited by a code enforcement officer and told if they did not dig up their garden they would be fined $50 a day under the new laws.

They appealed, stating that the back yard did not receive enough sunlight to grow vegetables, and were ordered to appear before the board twice.

In the their second appeal, the pair decided to dig up the garden rather than pay the daily fine.
