The cheap fridge renovation trick Aussies are loving
There’s nothing worse than looking at a tired kitchen fridge everyday. With some simple DIY tips, your kitchen can look brand new.
Aussies are getting creative in their kitchens with a DIY project that takes no time at all, and sets them back less than $20.
Fridge wrapping has resurfaced as a popular and economical way to refurbish your fridge without hiring professionals that can leave you hundreds of dollars out of pocket.
All you need is some vinyl contact — which comes in 2 metre rolls from Kmart for $3 — and a steady hand.
The conversation started on a Kmart hack Facebook group this week, after a woman asked for people for advice.
“Vinyl wrapped fridges only! Show me! Am I about to make a big mistake?” the woman asked.
While some people immediately wrote back with a strong ‘yes, you are’, others said, if her fridge was old enough, there was nothing to lose by giving it a shot.
What emerged from the discussion was a large group of resourceful Aussies who love vinyl wrapping their refrigerators.
Many showed off their own efforts, claiming their creations have given their kitchens a new lease on life.
BOLD STATEMENTS
This woman posted her impressive efforts with a Moroccan-style tile contact cover she used on her refrigerator.
While some people claimed the pattern “hurts your eyes” but others seemed to appreciate the work behind it, saying “this is actually really nice!”
PAINT AND VINYL
It’s not always large fridges that need a facelift.
This little bar fridge was given a stylish makeover and now serves as a dedicated fridge for holding a family’s eggs.
“I painted the front with black board paint and vinyled the sides,” the owner said.
BLACKBOARD
One mum told the group she covered the front of her fridge with blackboard contact to keep her family on track with schedules during the week.
“We use it soo much! Notes for the kids, shopping, etc," she said.
Other members claimed it was an “awesome idea”, with some chiming in with a tip that Kmart sells blackboard contact.
“You can get it at Kmart, two metres for $3,” one woman wrote.
Some handy people suggested purchasing pots of chalk paint, from any hardware store, to cover the surface of the fridge surface for an instant blackboard effect.
“Our entire old fridge, roof, sides and all, was painted with chalkboard paint from Bunnings,” a girl wrote.
Another mum painted her outdoor fridge in chalkboard paint and said the new drawing surface was a fun way for her kids to be creative.
Another group member posted a photo of her blackboard fridge, which she accented with copper vinyl for a stylish touch.
This fridge was a crowd favourite, despite it still being a work in progress.
COPPER
Another woman shared a photograph of her copper vinyl wrapped fridge and said while she liked the shine, she had problems adhering it to her fridge.
“Mine has a few dings in it that really show through, and a few tricky bits to cut around,” she wrote.
She warned home decorators to use a ruler to iron out the bumps in their vinyl contact.
“I also found it a lot easier to BlueTac one end (of the contact) to the fridge and work from the other,” she said.
“And if you have kids, make sure they’re asleep first!”
MARBLE
Marble is hugely popular among interior designers currently, and Kmart picked up on this, offering rolls of marble-style contact for $3 each.
This woman showed off her marble-wrapped fridge, on which she keeps her kid’s rewards charts organised.
BRANDS
A woman wrote on the group that she used her favourite brand of car, a Volkswagen, as the inspiration for her beer fridge renovation.
“I’ve painted mine and purchased a VW logo and glued it on,” she wrote.
“It’s now the beer fridge outside in our pergola.”
DIY ARTWORK
Some members of the Kmart hacks group revealed they had used their fridge as a blank canvas instead.
One woman said she painted the top of her fridge with a variety of characters.
