Target stores closing: Photo proves 'sad' reality for department store

“Devastated” customers have lamented the closure of the discount department store, with one photo summing up the brutal reality of the closing Targets.

Shoppers are turning their backs on Aussie retailers

A photo of a closing Target store with bare shelves and low stock has shown the “sad” reality of the department store, loyal customers have lamented.

On Friday shoppers were blindsided by an announcement from parent company Wesfarmers would be massively restructuring Target.

There will be 53 closures and 53 conversions of Target stores into new Kmart branches, with the restructure process expected to take 12 months.

A photo posted in the Target Mums Australia Facebook page showed Target's Campbelltown store's homewares department looking rather forlorn, with empty shelves and hardly any stock.

The Sydney store is scheduled to be shuttered permanently by July.

“How sad is it when your local target is closing down and they don’t have any homewares,” the mum captioned the photo.

The mum also added that prior to the closure announcement the Campbelltown store had been “always nicely organised”.

Her post soon attracted plenty of comments from others saddened at the loss of the discount department store.

“We lost our Target not last year but the year before. I’m devastated they’re basically all shutting," one person wrote.

"Target in my opinion is way better than Kmart and Big W. Their kids clothes are the best. Love their homewares too.”

“The kids clothes at a Target have always been brilliant. I’ve always purchased nearly all my daughters clothes from there, I rarely buy her clothes from elsewhere,” another person added.

"”This saddens me. I love Target quality over Kmart,” one comment read.

In a statement about the restructure, managing director of Target Australia Marina Joanou thanked customers for their “continued support and understanding”.

“You may have heard about changes that have been announced regarding the future of Target,” Ms Joanou wrote.

“As a result of these changes, a number of our stores will be leaving the Target family. Some of these stores will be converting to Kmart and, sadly, some will be closing. The majority of these changes will happen next year.

“We understand these closures will affect a lot of people in the Target community and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times. We are committed to providing every opportunity for redeployment for our team members who will be affected by these changes.

“We are proud to have a rich history as an Australian company and we are committed to serving you, our valued customers, now and into the future. We have many Target stores which remain unaffected by today’s announcement and you can continue to shop with us online with the same ease and convenience.”
